I have now reached the 30year mark of my journey in a profession that has been a remarkable experience. Not only self-sustaining and portable, it has been a source for deep connection with others, an outlet for the Aloha I have been raised with. I am deeply grateful for the quality teachers I have had along the way and attribute my longevity in this field to their good teaching. I still consider myself a nuts and bolts therapist, I believe it is important to understand the parts, how they operate and how they work together. However, the evolution of my education, experience and personal healings have given me tools to acknowledge that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made!” each of us a microcosm of the macro whose wellness, thinking, feeling, and willing are intricately interwoven with our natural environment, synthetic environment, and the Spiritual world.
It is my commitment to my clients to meet them free of my own agenda, with good listening skills approaching their bodies aches, pains, and tensions as a meditation. From a sound education in the physical sciences and a well-practiced intuition I fall into the rhythms and currents of each client’s body, delighting in the discovery of the keys to unlock core distortions and stagnancies which are the root of discomfort and disease. I intend to assist healing in each client by balancing the tone of muscles, moving fluids, and manipulating the nervous system so that each person can find their way back to balance, relaxed alertness, and comfortable function. I acknowledge that I am only capable of one of the steps along the way in a persons healing journey, it is up to each of us to take up the good work of self-knowledge and the final responsibility(I’m not talking catastrophic issues here) lands on us to care for this one body we have been given to marvel and experience the gift of life in. I am happy to be in service to one of the ways you can take care of yourselves.
Be well and stay tuned to how my work morphs in this current personal and world environment.

After a couple of years being in service to Military Veterans I realized the way I was working was not sustainable for me…at my age. As a Federal Program of course there were a couple of uncomfortable issues; the format was a one massage right after the other routine and I wasn’t making a customary wage. I was making up for the wage issue by adding in a few private clients as well.
The wear and tear began to show up in my hands for the first time in my career, 26 years in, as a Licensed Massage Therapist. Time for another change…
It was then that a therapist I had been doing exchanges with let me know she was selling her practice and moving out of state.

July 2014 David was diagnosed with ALS and was gone by December 4, 2015. His first comment before we left the hospital was "Babe, we aren't prepared for the end of this but the journey is going to prepare us. We have to stay in the present moment." We also acknowledged that each of us has had almost a lifetime of education and experience in our own particular tasks on this journey.
It was shocking and heart breaking. His sense of humor was intact and he never complained. Only once he said “this isn’t fun anymore”
I of course stopped working once he was diagnosed and allowed myself the first year as a widow to not even think about what I was going to do next.
As I began to feel my feet under me again it was time to make a plan. Over the years I have become sensitive to the feeling my hands get of longing to be of service again. I followed them back into practice with a few false starts. What really captured my attention was doing massage for Military Veterans through a Federal program at Cedars Chiropractic with Dr Charles Antouri www.cedarschiro.com
Talk about going from 0 to 60 mph in 1 second! My heart was full but my body was exhausted!

In 2009 David was recruited by Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital to fill the position of Director of the Chaplaincy program. We relocated to Nevada County where we had first been introduced in 2004 at Scotts Flat Lake Campground. On 9/9/9 we were married at the court house and in July 2010 bought our home in Smartsville.
Once again my practice was put on hold as David encouraged me to “massage” our land for a time, creating paths to the creek and building soil for gardens.
Word began to spread and I was able to build a small manageable practice from my home.
I love the word of mouth way of building a business. Up to this point I had never been inclined to brand, advertise and develop ways of “driving traffic” to my business. So far I had no trouble building a practice that supports me. Thank you dear Clients!!!!!

Having settled in to life in the village of Old Fair Oaks near the American River I began to build a massage practice again. This was my first experience of having a work space in my home. It allowed me to weave my work beautifully with tending my garden, studying Biodynamic Agriculture and enjoying the company of David Swetman. I would be remiss if I did not include in this reminiscence of my 30 years as an LMT, that David was also a primary teacher influencing my life and my work. His listening skills and knack for asking the best questions were outstanding. He was a professional counselor yes, but he was genuinely curious and fascinated by others biographies, that stuff that makes us who we are. He helped me to see clearly where and how the stories I tell myself got laid down…

David and I cut our travels short and returned to California in August 2005 in time to register for the year-long Consciousness Studies program at the Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks. In September 2005 I met my next and current teacher Dennis Klocek of Soil, Soul and Spirit www.dennisklocek.com the creator and main lecturer of the Consciousness Studies Course. It was an experiential alchemical journey of the soul that explored the evolution of consciousness, the development of the human body in utero, human temperaments, Sacred Geometry, alchemy, plant physiology, Goethean observation, scultpture, eurethmy and more.

...Of course in hind sight it is clear that this transitional phase was serving as preparation for my next chapter of studying the human bodymind.
As the way is with the spiritual world there are human angels placed along our path ESPecially when you are in a meltdown. While at the 4 day WOMAD (World of music, arts, and dance festival) in New Zealand I was reaching a fevered peak of menopause and my brain was melting. I had to do something!
I saw a woman who my spirit somehow recognized and zombie-like I went over to her and all I could say is “I need help”. She told me where to go, “there is a massage tent and a Maori Healer named Mahine Kuru is there”. Somehow I made my way and found it was a brilliant suggestion. An environment I could understand, a bunch of folks doing chair massage. A woman with the tattooed Moku on her mouth and chin, their sign of healer, walked up to me and just handed me a baby saying here hold him then walked away. I could feel myself grounding and coming back in to myself as I stood there holding this baby…

In the study of Alchemy everything has the potential to turn into its opposite. In a rapid turn of events and another one of my “Dorothy is not in Kansas anymore” experiences, I moved off the Island and joined David.
David had given up his home, gave away stuff and packed everything else up in order to move to Maui. Another alchemical principle is flux, flow, flux. When we are in the watery state of flow there is MORE POTENTIALITY, LESS FIXEDNESS. We had leaped together into the realm of the unknown and unplanned. We found home in each other and went deep and broad fast. Little did we know then why we needed this strong foundation. I would not do another professional massage for one year as we travelled to New Zealand, Australia and Southeast Asia. I would find out just how compassionate, brilliant, patient and understanding David is as this sudden dramatic change of life and constant travel slammed me headlong into menopause!

2004 became a very significant year in my practice and life.
By now I am dancing hula in the place I used to dance stories about, wildcrafting flowers and leaves to make my own hula adornments, I was dancing for the Late Kumu Hula Ualani Maka’ike in traditional Halau Hula I Kona Mau Lima. I am immersed in the study of chant with Kumu Tau’a, singing and chanting in classes with Ulawehi Guerrero and Keali’I Reichel, swimming and riding my bike all over the Island and enjoying the variety of clients I am taking care of. As I prepared to go to Fair Oaks, California on some business I was told by an Island friend “If you are going to Fair Oaks, you need to meet David Swetman, you two have the same heart, you talk the same!” We met and became intrigued over the two weeks I was there. We fell in love over the phone and by the next 8 months were making plans for David to move to Maui!

Inflammation and Stagnation are two good reasons to study the Lymphatic System. Today, it becomes significantly important because of its value in our Immune System. In short, I picture the Lymph system as the sorter and mover of the stuff we take in to us. What can’t be made in to us is moved toward elimination. What can be made in to us is moved into the blood to be transported to the cells for use. The further away from nature we eat and drink the body says “wait, what is this? We better send it to a node to break it down a bit so we know what to do with it!” Stagnation= Think of creeks with beaver dams, or what the water looks like at the end of summer when water is low and furry stuff grows on the rocks.

In 2004 Bruno Chikly, MD, DO https://chiklyinstitute.com/ came to Maui to teach a Level One Lymph Drainage Therapy course. I had taken level one in Washington before moving to Maui but when you get a chance to take a course from the doctor that developed it…You take it!! Understanding the movement of fluid in the body was a personal interest of mine for my own physical challenges. Click on pictures for more of the story.

The morning after our graduation we each went a different direction home. Since I was the only student that lived on Maui I was given a few “homework” assignments. I would be in charge of continuing the tradition of Hale Pulo’ulo’u on Maui, harvesting guava branches, building the sweat frame and covering it, setting up the firepit and tending the fire for the 4 or 5 hours that the stones were heating. This was done especially when Dr Maka'ala Yates would return to teach workshops but also to continue the tradition for our Maui Community. It was truly my ecstatic joy to do this, my inner young Campfire Girl and my grown-up pursuer of the Goddess Pele were in their bliss!

As the two-month long program in Hawaiian Healing Arts was coming to its end, graduation preparation included a four day fast and seawater cleanse ending with a sweat, weaving of graduation lei, and the ceremony. The evening concluded with a celebration feast and mixed feelings about going our separate ways.

Hale Pulo’ulo’u =Hawaiian Sweat Lodge, was a weekly ritual during the two month residential course in Hawaiian Healing Arts I was taking with Kumu Maka’ala Yates D.C. It served as a community building experience, a discipline that was an honor to learn, a health benefit through detox and part of the personal transformation that was intended under the philosophy that true spirituality relates to self-knowledge. One of the rounds in the sweat was always “what does your name mean”. It is interesting what starts coming to you when you open up to that question.

ALOHA and Happy Valentines day! My recap of 30 years as an LMT continues...
…Kumu Maka’ala teaches from the historical timeline of pre-contact. Meaning from a place of non-separation between the kingdoms of mineral, plant, animal, human and spiritual. The Indigenous “knowing” that we are one organism of many dimensions (paraphrased). Humans are not separate from each other, the spiritual world, or the world of nature, our systems of life are invisibly woven together and support each other in magnificent ways. Community service, celebration, and ritual are deeply embedded in the life of the so-called healer.

…Lomi’ili’ili = lomi massage with hot stones. Of course this treatment is all the more meaningful when you travel to beaches in search of the stones that you will use. Tumbled smooth by the rhythmic action of the waves moving the stones up and down the beach is a metaphor for life. The experiences in life that seem to give us a tumble can smooth our edges, making us more Ha’aha’a (humble) and compassionate, therefore a more healing presence to others. Were were taught how to use the stones in motion to warm tissues and as a tool for golgi tendon release.

La’au Lapa’au= Plant medicine, was a big part of the two month Hawaiian Healing Arts program (Flashback, as a teenager and a dancer I made a pack with myself when I was at the grocery store. Instead of buying a candy bar I could buy a green apple and a 49cent houseplant.) I LOVED growing plants, still do and as I aged no matter where I lived I always found the herb farms and passionate plant ladies to discover new plants and take classes with. Watching my plants grow was medicine enough for me at the time, I was more focused on the physical sciences so my love for plants was a hobby with a curiosity that maybe one day I could do more with them…
