Nurses have been caring for soldiers on the battlefield for 250 years. It was only in 1901 that we were formally recognized as a Corps.

I come from a great generation of Army Nurses who do not ask, โ€œDid you deploy?โ€ The question is โ€œhow many times did you deploy?โ€

Ready. Proud. Caring.

On November 21, 2025, Brittany Ely and her family welcomed a healthy baby girl into the world. The delivery went well, and mother and baby returned home.

Several hours later, Brittany, an experienced nurse with a background in critical care and labor & delivery, awoke to severe postpartum hemorrhaging. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, 911 was activated.

Concord Township Fire Department paramedics were quickly dispatched. After reviewing the call notes, they immediately requested whole blood from Elkhart City Fire Department, which has been carrying prehospital whole blood since April 29, 2025.

Upon arrival, Concord paramedics Christy Goodwin and Zach Demeester recognized the critical nature of the emergency and rapidly loaded Brittany for transport. Elkhart medics arrived shortly after and joined the Concord crew en route.

Brittany received whole blood in the field while being transported to the hospital, prompting continued whole blood administration in the emergency department, along with multiple additional blood products during surgery and definitive care. She was discharged home the very next day.

As an experienced nurse, Brittany credits the quick actions of the Concord paramedics and the administration of prehospital whole blood with her positive outcome. It was truly a pleasure to meet Brittany and her family.

While the Elkhart County Prehospital Whole Blood Program is still in its infancy, it is already improving outcomes, bridging a critical gap in care that, in the past, too often contributed to loss and suffering.

If you are a Transfusion Administration Service (TAS) (ie, prehospital agency), your Transfusionists, prescribing physicians, and staff, anywhere blood is issued or transfused, need access to it. ๐Ÿš‘ ๐Ÿš

Why? Because the FDA says so. Blood is a medication. Like all other medications, there is a mile-long insert that comes with it. Attaching this information to a blood container is impractical, so the ๐—–๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป is an acceptable extension of container labels.

How do we make this work outside of the hospital? You can keep hardcopies on-hand. You can upload it to your protocols. You can make a QR code that links to the information. All kinds of ways to make it happen and meet the Federal Requirement.

EARLY ADOPTERS: Go back and check your protocols to make sure this information is available!!

Another important tool. See the State Level Policy Power Point presentation for Talking Points supporting prehospital blood use.

National Blood Donor Month is also a key moment for legislative engagement at the state level. As many state legislators begin their sessions in January, they are often most receptive to briefings from constituents and subject matter experts.

To support member advocacy efforts, AABB has released a new State Policy Briefing Toolkit designed to help members educate policymakers about blood donation challenges, safety and preparedness.

The new toolkit includes:

๐Ÿ”น 24-slide customizable PowerPoint presentation.
๐Ÿ”น Detailed speaker notes with key messages.
๐Ÿ”น Content on blood donation awareness, safety and emergency preparedness.
๐Ÿ”น Ready-to-adapt materials for your state.

Members can use National Blood Donor Month as an entry point to request meetings with legislators and health committees and to reinforce the importance of a strong and safe blood system.

It was exciting to help Safen Medical with their National Sales launch.
They are my 1st client. Long before I ever thought about making consulting an actual business. A friend thought I might have input that the company could use.
I was intentionally brought in by the CEO to help design a product that met the needs of the bedside clinicians.
I have learned so much over the last 6+ years about working with engineers, the manufacturing processes, etc!!
I look forward to watching clinicians use this simple, low tech device to improve bedside communication and decrease preventable medication errors.

Join us for our Prehospital Blood Transfusion Coalition General Meeting for a fantastic presentation by the world's leading authority on the topic, Dr Mark Yazer.

He does an incredible job of breaking down this complex topic for EMS agencies and blood banks, helping them make informed decisions about the products they use. I have heard his presentation a dozen times, and I always learn something new!

Date: January 19, 2026
Time: 11:00am-12:15pmCST

We know Monday is a Federal Holiday, but the vast majority of our Coalition members are not on traditional schedules, so we are holding our meeting. Join us from work or in your pajamas from home- we have a lot of great information and updates to share!

In 2019, the Medical Director for Maryland State Police Aviation reached out to me and asked, โ€œhow do we do this in Maryland?โ€. It took several years and lots of hurdles, but they got it done.
Seeing headlines like this gives me incredible satisfaction that the work we do matters. Congrats to all of those involved in getting the whole blood to the Right Patient(s), at the Right Place, at the Right Time! ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿš

A garbage truck struck a tractor-trailer, killing the driver and sending three others to the hospital during a response that included extended extrication and the use of whole blood
