๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Dr. Jill Rotruck!

We are proud to share that Dr. Jill Rotruck has been promoted to Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Yale School of Medicine.

Dr. Rotruck is a fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologist and adult strabismus specialist at the Yale Eye Center. She provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for children and adults with complex eye conditions including amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, eyelid disorders, and strabismus.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Rotruck is deeply committed to resident education and advancing research in pediatric eye disease, including vision screening and the use of optical coherence tomography in pediatric ophthalmology.

This promotion recognizes her outstanding contributions to clinical care, education, and scholarship.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mercy Kibe and Dr. Soshian Sarrafpour have been appointed Associate Residency Program Directors, effective July 1, 2026.

In their new roles, they will work closely with Dr. Jessica Chow, who continues as Residency Program Director and Vice Chair for Education, to support the continued growth, operational strength, and educational advancement of our residency program.

Drs. Kibe and Sarrafpour are highly respected clinician-educators deeply committed to resident mentorship, surgical training, curriculum innovation, recruitment, evaluation, and resident wellness. Their leadership will further strengthen the day-to-day infrastructure of the program while advancing long-term strategic priorities and alignment with ACGME standards.

๐ŸŽ“ Meet Us Monday | Beyond the Match: Getting to Know Our Ophthalmology Residents - Class of 2030

Weโ€™re pleased to introduce Christina Jayaraj, MD, a member of our incoming Ophthalmology Residency Class of 2030.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin and raised in Tampa, Florida, Dr. Jayaraj attended the University of Miami, where she studied Biochemistry and Classics. She went on to Yale School of Medicine, where she developed an academic interest in retinal biomarkers and identifying ocular manifestations of systemic disease.

Her work reflects a strong commitment to integrating ophthalmology with broader medical insight to improve diagnosis and patient care. Dr. Jayaraj is excited to continue building on these interests during her residency training at Yale.

Outside of medicine, she enjoys playing tennis, rock climbing, and making pottery. She is looking forward to remaining in New Haven and continuing her training at Yale. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธโœจ

๐ŸŽ“ Meet Us Monday | Beyond the Match: Getting to Know Our Ophthalmology Residents - Class of 2030

Weโ€™re pleased to introduce Brandon Chou, MD, a member of our incoming Ophthalmology Residency Class of 2030.

A first-generation Chinese American, Dr. Chou was born in Canada and raised in Parkland, Florida. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami, where early research in the Ophthalmic Biophysics Center sparked his interest in applying engineering principles to advance clinical ophthalmology.

Dr. Chou matriculated to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine through the Medical Scholars Program, continuing his translational research in ocular imaging, photodynamic antimicrobial therapy, and visual photosensitivity. Alongside his research, he has remained deeply committed to service, leading free specialty clinics and childrenโ€™s vision screening programs for underserved communities.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys traditional Chinese martial arts and exploring portfolio management strategies and market simulations. He is thrilled to begin his residency training at Yale and looks forward to joining the New Haven community. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธโœจ

We are pleased to announce that Edward Lim, MD will serve as Director of the Vitreoretinal Fellowship Program, effective immediately.

Dr. Lim brings more than 26 years of vitreoretinal medical and surgical expertise to this role. A board-certified ophthalmologist with longstanding ties to our department, he completed his Vitreoretinal Surgery and Medical Retina fellowship at Yale and has demonstrated an enduring commitment to clinical excellence, surgical precision, and trainee mentorship.

As Director, Dr. Lim will oversee the strategic direction, curriculum development, and clinical training experience for our vitreoretinal fellows. Working alongside Mercy Kibe, MD, recently appointed Associate Director of the Vitreoretinal Fellowship Program, he will further strengthen our Division of Vitreoretinal Surgery and continue advancing the highest standards in surgical education and patient care.

๐ŸŽ“ Meet Us Monday | Beyond the Match: Getting to Know Our Ophthalmology Residents - Class of 2030

Weโ€™re pleased to introduce Maximilian Kong, MD, a member of our incoming Ophthalmology Residency Class of 2030.

Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Kong earned his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at Cornell University and is currently completing medical school at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. He developed an early interest in ophthalmology after working with the department as a first-year medical student.

Between his third and fourth years of medical school, Dr. Kong completed a dedicated research year with Dr. Stephen H. Tsang at Columbia, where he focused on inherited retinal disease. His experiences have shaped a strong interest in both clinical and research-driven ophthalmology.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys cooking, weight training, and finding budget-friendly restaurants. He is grateful for the opportunity to train at Yale and looks forward to joining the program later this year. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธโœจ

Weโ€™re proud to share a new Yale Ophthalmology publication in Ophthalmology Science advancing how artificial intelligence is evaluated in eye care. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ“Š

โ€œBEnchmarking Large Language Models for Ophthalmology (BELO)โ€ introduces an expert-curated benchmark to rigorously assess the knowledge and clinical reasoning capabilities of large language models in ophthalmology. This work represents an important step toward thoughtful, responsible integration of AI in research, education, and patient care.

Congratulations to co-authors Dr. Lucian Del Priore, Dr. Kristen Nwanyanwu, and Dr. Amisha Dave on this impactful contribution to the field.
