Fear is adaptive. It's useful. It's evolutionary.
Right? Yes... but...
What if you're someone who has a history of chronic anxiety, health anxiety, intrusive thoughts, trauma, panic attacks or hypervigilance.
What if your 'fear switch' got flicked (rightly so) but then got jammed on.
If this is you, you might have a fear response, where others feel excitement, mild nerves, mere trepidation... or nothing at all!
And when we get 'stuck' in this threat mode we experience:
- Faulty interoception: misreading out own internal signals as sinister when they may be neutral (or misfiring due to stress)
- Faulty neuroception: misreading danger cues in our environment
- Constant hypervigliance and scanning for threat
- A heightened startle reflex
- Misreading others emotions as negative or misattributing others emotions as our fault or responsibility
The work becomes rewiring these things.
Recognising that, if this is you - fear doesn't always = danger.
