Our third staff highlight for Patient Safety Awareness Week is Tyler P. from our Utilization Management Department.

Tyler supports patient safety by helping create a positive and supportive environment where communication is a priority for both staff and patients. By encouraging open dialogue and teamwork, Tyler helps ensure that concerns are heard and that patients feel supported throughout their care.

Tyler also encourages patients and their families to be active members of the care team by empowering patients to advocate for themselves and participate in their treatment. Promoting patient involvement helps ensure individuals feel supported during their time in the facility and better prepared for success once they transition back into the community.

Looking ahead, Tyler plans to continue strengthening collaboration by focusing on clear communication with both staff and patients and welcoming feedback from all parties to help improve care and support.

✨ “I enjoy being able to work as a team. From working with direct co-workers in my department to doctors, social workers, and various team members to best support patients and each other.”

Thank you, Tyler, for helping us Team Up for Patient Safety every day. 💚

As part of our Patient Safety Awareness Week series, we’re continuing to highlight team members who help us Team Up for Patient Safety every day!

Today's Spotlight: Gregory P. - Mental Health Technician

Gregory supports patient safety by attentively following care plans, monitoring patients for any changes in their condition, and promptly reporting concerns to the nursing team. While working on Monarch, he assists patients with mobility, ensures proper use of equipment, and follows infection control protocols to help reduce the risk of falls and the spread of illness.

He also helps maintain a safe environment by keeping patient areas clutter free, conducting thorough room checks, and checking for potential ligature points. Gregory takes initiative by submitting work orders when something appears out of place and regularly checking doors to help minimize elopement risks and keep the unit secure.

Looking ahead, Gregory plans to continue strengthening collaboration by confidently communicating with technicians and nurses, sharing important patient updates, and supporting coworkers when help is needed. He also remains committed to learning from others and staying open to feedback so the team can continue delivering the best possible care together.

✨ “My favorite part about working at Silver Oaks is building relationships with patients and coworkers, knowing that I can make a positive difference in their daily lives. I also appreciate being part of a diverse team that works together to provide compassionate patient care.”

Thank you, Gregory, for helping us Team Up for Patient Safety every day. 💚

🤝 Patient Safety Awareness Week | March 8–14

At Silver Oaks, patient safety is a shared responsibility. This Patient Safety Awareness Week, we are embracing this year’s theme, “Team Up for Patient Safety,” by highlighting the power of collaboration across our hospital. Throughout the week, we’ll be spotlighting a staff member each day who helps strengthen patient safety through teamwork, communication, and compassionate care.

Today’s Patient Safety Spotlight: Taylor J. - Lead Program Therapist

Taylor helps improve patient safety by actively listening and remaining fully present with patients from the very beginning of their care. By understanding each patient’s individual needs, Taylor works to create a supportive treatment environment. This can include helping accommodate dietary restrictions, providing calming tools like journals or stress-relief items, and offering thoughtful supports such as photos of loved ones during difficult moments. Taylor also attends patient codes to help communicate with and support patients during times of crisis, helping de-escalate situations and ensure patients feel heard.

Taylor encourages patients and families to be active members of the care team by clearly explaining treatment options, leading family meetings, and helping them navigate complex systems like insurance, community resources, and aftercare planning. By promoting shared decision-making and advocating for each patient’s goals and values, Taylor helps ensure care remains patient-centered.

Looking ahead, Taylor plans to continue strengthening collaboration by enhancing communication with clinical staff and improving coordination with community aftercare providers so patients experience smoother transitions in care.

✨ “I value the collaborative environment the hospital fosters. My primary objective at SOBH is to make a meaningful difference for every patient I serve, which begins with close cooperation across the entire treatment team.”

Thank you, Taylor, for helping us Team Up for Patient Safety every day. 💚

For the fourth week of our Black History Month Pioneer Spotlight series, Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital honors Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint, a renowned psychiatrist, author, and advocate for mental health equity. Dr. Poussaint has dedicated his career to exploring the effects of racism, social inequities, and trauma on mental health, helping to bring awareness to challenges that have historically been overlooked in Black communities.

His work emphasizes the importance of culturally informed, compassionate care and the role of social context in understanding and supporting mental wellness. We continue his work by delivering care that respects each individual’s experiences and promotes lasting understanding and well-being.

As we close our Black History Month series, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of these pioneers, leaders, advocates, and visionaries whose work continues to inspire how we provide care, support our community, and champion equity in behavioral health. 💚

This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week!

Eating disorders are serious, complex mental health conditions that affect people of all ages, genders, races, and backgrounds. They are not a choice, and they are not about vanity. They are illnesses that deserve compassion, understanding, and evidence-based care.

Millions of individuals in the United States struggle with conditions such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and other disordered eating behaviors. Early intervention and supportive treatment can make a life-changing difference.

At Silver Oaks, we believe in meeting individuals where they are with dignity, empathy, and clinical excellence. Recovery is possible. Healing is possible. And no one has to walk that journey alone.

If you or someone you love is struggling, reaching out for help is a powerful first step.
