An Achilles rupture is a nasty injury. This tendon essentially allows your calf to contract to propel your body forward. In other words, it plays a huge role in your ability to walk. Without proper post-op treatment, this surgery can change your gait forever.
If you think about the kinetic chain being built from the ground up, then the closer an injury is to the ground, the more possibilities for disfunction and compensation to form in the joints above it.
For example, this client is almost a year post-op on a full Achilles repair. He is struggling with very restricted range of motion still which causes him to limp and is translating to lower back pain. I wish he had come in sooner! Our progress may take a little longer, but we will get there.
This is why it’s so important to come for treatment as soon as possible. The longer you exist with pain, the more you compensate. The more you compensate, the more puzzle pieces there are to put back together. Do your body, and your therapist a favor, and get treated when you first start to feel pain, or as soon as your cleared from surgery (if necessary).
