I chose this quote because Julia Poche is definitely in the extraordinary” category!

I met Julia about 8 months ago at the New Orleans Boxing Club. When she told me she was a Freshman at Ursuline Academy (now going into her Sophmore year), I was floored.

Where a lot of teens these days are looking for the next party, Julia is looking forward to getting to the club (The New Orleans Boxing Club), that is ;)

I was mesmerized by the power of her punches on the bag and how quick her footwork was as she moved around the ring.

I wanted to find out more about what brought her to boxing so I interviewed her!

My hope is that her story/experience may inspire another girl to perhaps put on some boxing gloves or lace up and go for a run in hopes of adopting a fitness routine early.

What got you interested in boxing?

Over quarantine, I was extremely bored with myself and was trying to give myself something to do. I had gotten a bag for my birthday the previous but never really used it. during the summer of 2020, I started watching youtube videos showing me the basics of boxing. I really just wanted a sport that depended completely on me.

What do you love most about boxing and what has it taught you?

The thing I love most about boxing and the NOBC is the community. It is by the far the most respectful sport because everyone in it wants to be the best but they still support each other. It has taught me a lot of discipline. There were many things I thought my body was not capable of until I started boxing and realized it is all a mental game. You have to tell yourself you are capable not doing that one exercise or sparring that one person.

Who is your favorite professional boxer and why?

My favorite professional boxer is Manny Pacquiao. I am a Southpaw (left handed) so it helps watching him because he fought in a Southpaw stance. He is also a very respectable man in and out of the ring.

🧘‍♀️Studio : Grace Yoga , 4223 Magazine St. , NOLA…. The space is so beautiful and filled with positive vibes.

🧘‍♀️Instructor : Cally Skye led this class and legit took me to another world. She is a Minnesota native who is not only a certified yoga teacher but also a trauma release breath work facilitator.

🧘‍♀️Class : Restorative Yoga , Sundays, 6pm

Restorative yoga is a restful practice that is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching. If you take a restorative class, you may hardly move at all, doing just a few postures over the course of an hour.

By definition, restorative yoga is a restful practice that holds yoga poses (asanas) for a longer duration using props like yoga blocks, blankets, and bolsters. It is a practice of deep relaxation that emphasizes the meditative aspect of yoga—the union of body and mind. Through the use of props for support, many of the postures are held almost effortlessly.

When the body enters a state of relaxation the mind can also consciously relax as tension is released from both body and mind. The only work that's required on your part during a restorative yoga practice is to pay attention to your breath and become aware of any sensations or thoughts that may arise.

🧘‍♀️ My Take : It was such an amazing experience. I highly recommend this class for anyone who is looking to decompress or who suffers from any type of pelvic floor issues. I spend so much time killing it in the gym that it’s nice to balance my recovery days with a peaceful practice like this. I’ll be there again next Sunday! Join me 🧘‍♀️

When I got pregnant for my first daughter I became super conscious about what I was putting on my skin. The more I researched the more horrified I became about what ingredients are used on a regular Basis in most beauty products: makeup, body lotions and yep you guessed it deodorant!

Because antiperspirants are applied often and on skin near breasts, some reports claim that the chemicals could be absorbed through your skin and cause estrogen-like hormonal effects. Alzheimer’s and Breast Cancer have both been linked to aluminum compounds found in antiperspirants, and some might even contain infertility-causing toxic chemicals.

Aluminum, often the most active ingredient in antiperspirants, poses serious risks to our overall health as it’s carried through the bloodstream, targets the central nervous system and also settles into fatty tissue and breast tissue. With continued exposure, aluminum even has the potential to cross the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in the brain.

I love it because IT ACTUALLY WORKS! seriously y’all it will last the whole day, workout and all and NO STINK! Also unlike a lot of natural deodorants it didn’t burn or irritate my skin and I love the eco friendly cardboard packaging.

One thing you should expect when making the switch - a detox process. For 2-4 weeks expect to be smellier than usual while you detox your body from the aluminum. Trust me, the detox is worth it... I find that I need less deodorant and can use more Infrequently with natural deodorant and stink less!

Immune boosting smoothie recipe 🍊

There can never be enough immune boosting things in your life amiright?!?!

This is my personal go to immune boosting smoothie - I could drink this everyday, but especially on days that I feel run down or under the weather.

This smoothie combines a few power packed ingredients that will really give you a boost.

Ingredients:
1 c Ice
1/2 c almond milk or coconut water
1/2 tsp ground ginger (reduces inflammation, powerful antioxidant)
1 tsp turmeric (powerful anti-inflammatory)
1/3 c vanilla complete yogurt (contains probiotics and prebiotic - since 70% of your immune system is located in the gut, probiotics are essential in immune support)
1 orange 🍊 (vitamin c, fiber, potassium)
1 large banana (powerful antioxidant, improves digestion)

For all my SO soon to be mamas - here’s my 4mo bump-date with Bebe # ✌🏼

First off let me say I’m so excited to have this amazing platform to share this journey. Pregnancy is scary, weird and at times lonely (especially when you are feeling like 💩)

The past 4mo have been a mixture of nausea, vomiting, severe head aches and neck pain.... struggle bus y’all. I’ve barely worked out at all bc I’ve been so sick. I’m definitely not sharing this as a sympathy post, but just as a reminder that we go through chapters in our life. Especially becoming a mother or experiencing life as a new mom, your whole world is flipped upside down. My best advice, have patience and love for yourself.

I remember after having Elle thinking to myself “how in the hell do women get through this?!?”... I was so sleep deprived, my house was a mess, my body looked swollen and weird recovering from a c - section and the only effort I made to be a semi normal human was a shower each day. Oh the glorious shower (new moms y’all know what I’m talkin bout 🚿🧖🏼‍♀️)

I’m not upset that I haven’t worked out or feel crummy - I know this is just a temporary space and time. I’m giving myself all the grace. I hope that you do too!

New Orleans Boxing Club in partnership with Sweat Obsessed are bringing you the hottest (and funnest) new boxing fitness class right here in Mid-City!

On Friday, February 12th at 5:30pm , New Orleans Boxing Club will host a brand new boxing fitness class like the city HAS NEVER SEEN in their outdoor space which is sure to get you fired up! 🔥🔥🔥

Don’t worry if you’ve never boxed before! Their team will ensure that you feel comfortable learning the punches and have an amazing time doing it!

The class, taught by .nola , who is a professional boxer, will infuse the technical aspects of boxing mixed in with some good old fashion strength training and agility work.

It will target every muscle in your body and you won’t want to miss it! (Plus the music alone is just plain 🔥 so I might show up just for that ;)

Couple that in with cocktails post class provided by .tiki and delicious bites by and you quite possibly won’t want to go home!!!!

Sometimes in this city, we need to mix it up!

We need to be around new energy, new faces, new neighborhoods and new workouts .

💦 Class Review 💦

*let me preface this review by saying I was soo pumped to try this out because everything I’ve heard / read about Tracy Anderson had me convinced of her greatness! She is the “creator” essentially for this pulse sculpt type workout so her reputation precedes her. I only tried 2 classes and would be willing to try more, but it just wasn’t my fave - more on why after the review.

💦Class: Tracy Anderson Online

💦length: varies depending on the class

💦description: high repetition body weight or light weighted movements to lengthen and tone the body. A lot of the movements are dance/ ballet inspired and are designed to elevate the heart rate.

💦sweat level: 7/10 (to reiterate I only took 2 classes so I’m sure the more comfortable I got with this workout and with increased intensity the sweat level would increase)

💦tone level: 9/10 (even with no weights you can totally feel the burn so I know this workout will definitely get you toned)

💦cult level: 10/10 (literally scroll through her ads for this workout on social media and you’ll see how devoted her following is - it’s the definition of “cult” following)

💦vibe: 7/10 I wasn’t personally feeling the vibe of this workout online but I did like her music so that’s a plus

💦price: $95 per month (this was a big downside for me as I felt there are other programs that offered just as much value for way less $)

Okay so the main thing about this workout that I couldn’t get into is that she doesn’t talk (like no cues, coaching) you have to visually follow her movements. In a live class I can see the added benefit of really staying visual and In tuned to the mind body connection but watching this on a screen was hard. I was having to twist my neck all around to make sure I was doing the right move. I also am a fan of cues, I love to be reminded of foot placement or Breath technique - especially at home it’s easy to drift off on focus so those little cues bring you back to the burn. Lastly I was shocked by the price - I can name 3 other apps that have similar classes (that are amazing) that are wayyy less expensive.
