Did you know you could drown in only 2 inches of water!?

It is almost summertime, and we are already seeing pool related accidents in emergency rooms. Here are a few ideas to reduce drowning and swimming related accidents.

-Swim lessons as soon as possible.
-Talk to your children about water safety.
-Establish pool rules for all ages.
- Pay the extra money for a fence around your pool.
- High door locks and door chimes.
- Designate a water watcher and switch out every 15 minutes.
-Dress your child in bright colors to see them while under the water.
-Pickup pool toys at the end of your pool session.

Know your medications!

Time and time again I ask people what medications they are taking. I am always stunned to see how many people really do not know what their medications are or the medication’s action. This also includes over the counter medications and supplements. Knowing what you are prescribed, what the medicine’s intended action is and how to properly take the medication helps you better understand your health condition(s). Educate yourself and do not be afraid to ask questions to your medical provider. Knowing your meds and having a list of them can also help first responders and ER staff in emergency situations.

Tips:
- Use the same pharmacy for all your prescriptions.
- Get to know your pharmacist and ask questions.
- Write what the medication is for on top of the bottle and if it causes any side effects such as sleepiness etc.
- Make a list of your medical history (diagnosis/surgeries) and
medications.
- Include your doctors, pharmacy, and preferred hospital on the
list.
- Give a copy to someone you trust.

Do you know the signs of a stroke and could you identify them? Roughly 750,000 people/yr in the US have strokes. A stroke can occur when there is a blood clot (ischemic stroke) in the brain or when a vessel ruptures ( hemorrhagic stroke) . Strokes can present in many different ways. Some people have speech difficulties or speech loss and others can present with facial drooping or weakness/numbness in extremities. When a person has a hemorrhagic stroke they can also present with altered mental status, vomiting and loss of consciousness. Take time and educate yourself on the FAST acronym. An important thing to remember is, as soon as you notice the first symptom(s) get medical care immediately. A medication called tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) can be given for ischemic strokes but only up to 4.5 hours from the onset of symptoms. tPA helps release the blood clot in your brain and restore proper blood flow to the area affected.
