Adding TV Host to my resume ! 🎤

Y’all know I’ve always been a fan of anything related to health communication.

That’s one of the reasons why I started BBWG - an online community centered on emphasizing health and wellness, particularly advocating for the inclusion of traditional Caribbean foods/dishes

With this in mind, I decided I wanted to get more hands on experience with communication. Thus, I’m volunteering with my school’s comm team this year 😁

Am I scared to put myself out there ? YES!
Am I excited for this new opportunity? bigger yes !

There’s always a big fear when walking outside of your comfort zone, but I’m looking forward to the seeing where this takes me

Can y’all believe it’s almost one year since I started my Fulbright journey 😳 where did the time go??!

During my application process, I vividly recall searching high and low for any information that would help my application stand out

Here’s a few tips that I think helped to enhance my application:

✨Be outspoken- you should have a solid answer on why you’d like to be a Fulbrighter & why you’d like to study in the US.

✨Fulbright places an emphasis on national development. Thus, be aware of any current gaps within your field of interest that, once rectified with your expertise, can improve national advancement.

✨You’re going to be a cultural ambassador, so please keep a few cultural facts in your back pocket 😉

✨It’s totally normal to be nervous!! My palms were sweating throughout my interview but I kept it cool 😅

With that being said, remember to showcase your personality, smile & answer each question with confidence

3 years ago, I did a thing!

I stepped outside of my comfort zone and started BBWG ✨

One of my main goals was to debunk the false narrative that Trinidadian/Caribbean dishes can’t be healthy.

I vividly remember using a cereal box as a tripod just to get a certain angle for those recipe videos 😂

My creativity, tenacity and authenticity has allowed me to work with several brands, expanded my knowledge and passion for health communications & ofc, build a lovely online community ♥️

While I still have a very long way to go, I’m thankful for the journey thus far.

Do you read nutrition labels? ⚠️👀

During my trip to Mexico, I encountered something for the first time - front of package labeling

After hearing about this policy for years, it was refreshing to finally see the product in person.

Front of Package Warning labeling is practical strategy whereby the consumer can quickly and easily identify products with unhealthy nutrition profiles.

The octagon shaped nutrition warnings indicate if a product is HIGH in one or more nutrients that negatively impact health.

These nutrients usually include excess calories, sugar and/or sodium.

You’d be surprised to know that snacks marketed as “healthy” could also be silent suspects 🔍

Granted that a recent newspaper reported that 73% of attendees at a health fair were showing signs of diabetes and hypertension, I believe that this public policy can complement the work already being done in TT nutrition field.

My question to you is, would this warning sign help you make a healthier choice ? 👀

NB. Snacks can still be consumed, but in moderation !

Cheers, We made it through the first month of 2023!

I’ll be honest, I really and truly eased my way into this year without making any resolutions.

Usually I would set these big & unrealistic expectations for myself, and by the end of Jan, I’ve already fallen off the train on a few of them

This year, I’m focused on breaking down my goals into manageable chunks that I know I can accomplish given my schedule

Let’s celebrate the small and big wins of January even though we may not have gotten it all the way correct

Here’s mine:

🎉 Sticking to a consistent schedule regarding eating habits and exercise

🎉Expanding my wealth of knowledge and gaining a new hobby through new monthly reads

🎉Not letting my fear of the failure cripple my creative flow !!

🎉Speaking out more often in class (We still working real hard on this one😭)

🎉 Giving myself some grace when I don’t always get it right or when life gets in the way of the “plan”

I was recently asked what’s the future plans for BBWG ? To which the response was…crickets 😂

You see the thing is, as my mind evolves so does my content.

Research, design thinking for social impact and planning interventions especially within minority community have become my new love ☺️

Now more than ever, it’s important that representation matters and I can’t wait to bring my Trini flavour to the forefront

Speaking of flavour 👀 does that mean no more recipes and nutrition tips? Definitely not !

However, I’m letting y’all know from now, don’t expect any fancy layout because the way these exams and assignments are set up 🥲 pressure for your girl!

So BBWG community, are we down for a new ride ? 👀

Drop a 💧if you drank water today ⬇️

Y’all, these days I think the sun is out for vengeance because the way this heat is set up, my goodness 😭😭

Now more than ever, it’s important to stay hydrated by drinking at least 2 liters of water !

Trust me, dehydration ain’t it ! It can lead to unclear thinking, constipation and even your body overheating 🥲

Thus use this post as a gentle reminder to take a sip from that extra cute water bottle you bought, but keep forgetting on your desk 👀

As my favorite soca artiste would say “drink water and mind my business” 😊

When it comes to tomatoes, be sure to choose those with the brightest shade of red, why ?

The red pigment is called lycopene 👀 which is simple a naturally-occurring substance that helps to prevent cancer and other diseases.

While I’m one the rare persons that can eat these raw, cooking tomatoes in a bit of oil can help to release even more of these benefits ✨

Greetings Friends ! 🎉

I’ve been seeing so many new faces on my little corner of the internet, I decided why not do a reintroduction 🎉

My name is Gabrielle, from the beautiful twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹

Before entering university, I had ZERO ideas on what I wanted to study, I just knew it had to be something that involved food.

Fast forward a few years later, I ended up falling in love with my undergraduate degree in Nutritional Sciences.

Unfortunately, at the start of 2020, the contract for my corporate job ended - but that allowed me to take my passion for nutrition online. Thus, creating Balanced Bits with Gabs (content creation is a full time job btw 👀)

I firmly believe you shouldn’t limit yourself to just one passion.

Thus, while nutrition will always have a special place in my heart, I’ve recently been intrigued by culinary arts, so much so that I’m currently attending private classes to improve my skills in the kitchen. Call me Chef Gabs👩🏽‍🍳

On this page, you will find a mixture of nutrition tips, healthy recipes and a little dash of recipes that will tickle your sweet tooth 😉

In the meantime, I’d like to thank you so much for joining the community ♥️
