The babies' faces light up when they see their moms, with one even walking for the first time and another licking her lips.

A few ways to support new parents when you can’t physically be there. What else would you add?
💙 Drop off a meal, fresh fruit, coffee, or diapers
💙 If you snag a coveted grocery delivery slot, ask if they want to add on anything and then deliver it
💙 Leave a voicemail, hearing someone’s voice can be so uplifting

It's not dramatic to say that everything has changed since COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, hit the United States. As social distancing rules go into effect, leaders ban gatherings of 10 or more people, and local and state governments…

Some updates related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19):
💙 The best evidence we have says it's ok to keep nursing/pumping for your baby when either of you are sick (goes for most types of illnesses). You can always double-check with your provider.
💙 As of now, we're still offering home visits.
💙 Let us know if anyone is your house is sick, and we can consider the option of a secure phone/video consult instead!

The Birth of NOLA Milk Mom

Breastfeeding has been one of the most rewarding parts of first-time motherhood for me, but also one of the most challenging. That’s why I started NOLA Milk Mom -- to give other mommas the knowledge and support they need to reach their breastfeeding goals. Whether you’re struggling to find a comfortable latch with your new baby or just returned to work and need to figure out a pumping routine, I’m here to help! NOLA Milk Mom provides lactation education and counseling for every stage of breastfeeding, from pregnancy to weaning. Here’s our story:

Public Health Professional -- My personal breastfeeding journey and the birth of NOLA Milk Mom are both rooted in my public health background. I received my bachelor’s degree in child development from Tufts University in Boston and went on to earn my master's degree in public health from Columbia University in New York with a focus on reproductive and family health. I’ve spent the last decade serving women, children, and families in health care and community-based organizations. Most of my professional work has been centered on research and evaluation in maternal and child health, working with programs like Healthy Start.

Nursing Mother -- As a public health professional who is passionate about maternal and child health, there was never any question that I planned to breastfeed. I was fortunate to have a very healthy pregnancy, and imagined my delivery and breastfeeding would be smooth sailing. Then late in the third trimester I learned my baby was breech. Despite my best efforts, the baby wouldn’t turn, and I delivered my daughter by C-section. Thus began a very rocky start to our breastfeeding experience with more obstacles to come such as tongue tie, recurrent clogged ducts, and supply woes. There were so many moments when I wanted to throw in the towel (especially after I went back to work and breastfeeding meant pumping, pumping, and more pumping). But then my daughter would fall asleep with that blissed out, milk drunk face, and it was so completely worth it. Day by day, and with some great support from family, friends, and an amazing lactation counselor, my daughter and I started to find our rhythm and things got easier. Almost a year and half later, nursing is now a regular part of our daily routine, and I cherish each time my daughter happily signs “milk” (squeezing both little fists, stomping her feet, and smiling with excitement) and comes to snuggle in my lap.

Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) -- Through every high and low of breastfeeding, I found myself seeking out other nursing moms to share tips and tricks, encouragement and kudos. As my daughter moved into toddlerhood and we celebrated our one year “nursiversary,” I realized that providing breastfeeding support to other moms was not only a personal interest, but also a professional calling. I received my formal training in lactation counseling from Healthy Children’s Center for Breastfeeding, and I am certified by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP ID# 282716). Detailed information about my scope of practice is available here.
