Why is the word should problematic? The dictionary definition is a good place to start:

Oxford English Dictionary definition of should: “Used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness, typically when criticizing someone’s actions.”

When we should ourselves we are implicitly criticizing ourselves. Using words like "should," “need,” “must” and "ought" put whatever actions we will be doing in the future in the negative and are implying that we are not enough as we are or doing enough.

There is a wisdom of the head, and… a wisdom of the heart.” – Charles Dickens.

Emotional Mind is “heated” because it’s passionate, extreme, and intense. Reactions in the emotional mind make reasonable, logical thinking difficult. In this mind, you may notice the facts but find yourself distorting them based on your emotional state.

Reasonable Mind is “chill” because it’s objective. In this state you think logically and rationally using facts, numbers, equations, or cause and effect. Values and feelings are not important.

Wise Mind is the meeting of emotion mind and reasonable mind. It’s being able to see the value in both reason and emotion and choosing the middle path. When we access our inner wisdom, we say we are in Wise Mind.

Mondays suck. How can we make them suck a little less? Research has shown the act of being grateful and making space for thinking about the things you are grateful for(even just one minute a day) will make you feel happier and can have lasting impacts on your mood.

I like to practice gratefulness when I’m at the grocery store looking at all the items I get to choose amongst.

Is there room in your life for some more gratefulness?

We get so caught up in making all the “right” choices, not making mistakes, and doing what we “should” be doing that we forget to stop and reflect on what it is that we actually want? What personally brings us joy? Brings us excitement?
What were you doing the last time you experienced joy?
