MAMMOGRAM DAY

Don’t be scared of information. Preventative measures like your annual mammogram allow you to find out if there’s something going on and treat it as early as possible. It’s a little uncomfortable and these appointments can cause some anxiety but you are strong. You can do it. ♥️

🍒🍑 SUMMER FRUITS & VEGGIES

Cherries
Cherry season is short & sweet! They come in both tart & sweet varieties, packed with vitamin C & minerals like potassium and copper, all great for cell regeneration (strong immune system/glowing skin). For a tiny fruit, they’re loaded with fiber & juice, a sweet snack that will keep you full.

Zucchini
Yellow & green summer squashes are so versatile & easy to prepare. Zucchini is a high mineral food that can support healthy blood pressure with a high dose of magnesium. Eat them raw or cooked, sauteed or roasted with onion, or spiralized as “zoodles”. For a no-cook dinner, buy pre-spiralized zucchini (or just make wide noodle shapes with a vegetable peeler), add a store bought pesto & some fresh diced tomatoes.

Tomatoes
We're used to enjoying cooked tomatoes all year but there is nothing as fresh & delicious as a ripe tomato in the middle of the summer. Tomatoes are full of water & help us stay hydrated in the summer months when we lose a lot of sweat. Tomatoes come in tons of varieties. Put tomatoes on and in everything! - salad, sauces, sheet pan bakes, atop of fish or in a savory stew with beans. Enjoy raw or cooked. I recommend a lettuce and tomato sandwich with a healthy smear of good quality mayo on your fave bread - & add bacon or tofu!

Spinach
Mature spinach grows in the beginning of the summer, before things get too hot. A mild & versatile dark leafy green and a great “beginners’ green if you’re not accustomed to eating dark greens. Loaded with insoluble fiber, iron and calcium, it’s a nutrition power house. But so not bitter, so it can be added in a generous handful to a fruit or protein smoothie. Remove the tougher stems & sautee in olive oil/garlic & finish with a splash of balsamic vinegar or lemon juice.

Peaches
I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t look forward to peach season every year. Nature provides us with a perfect relief to summer heat and dehydration in a peach. With fiber, water and potassium, it’s like a sports drink that you can pick from a tree. Peaches improve your digestion & skin. They’re make a sweet treat in a savory salad.

Holidays are not all about food.
(But also, holidays are totally about food.)

Holidays are meant to be enjoyed In community - family, friends and loved ones are part of how and why we celebrate. And food is a part of that.

If you are working toward changes around your eating, try and balance your celebration with your long term goals. You can assess whether or not any particular food at a celebration is something you really want, and deciding to enjoy the food part of a holiday does not mean you’ve “failed” or given up on your health. It just means today is a special day and you want to experience all the specialness of it.

Try and really savor the things you love, the once-a-year foods that you won’t see again for a while. Be present while you enjoy these foods. When we enjoy special foods mindfully, we know when we’re full and when it’s time to stop before we are uncomfortable or unhappy.

Declare your independence from self-flagellation today! You are the best judge of what is best for your body and soul. Please don’t let rules or restrictions or points or numbers stop you from celebrating. And don’t abandon yourself and your long term goals just because today presents more foods than other days. You are the captain of your own ship. You do what’s best for you. (And that might mean saving room for a s’more.)

GROCERY SHOPPING HACK💰

Using apps like Ibotta and Merryfield can save you money during your next grocery trip. Not an ad-I genuinely love these apps.

You can also get additional discounts with your Amazon Prime membership.

If sale prices make organic foods more accessible, great. But just do your best and do what your budget dictates. That might include opting for conveniences like precut produce - we only have so much time - but choose wisely!! It’s worth your while to crunch the numbers while you shop - sometimes the sale price isn’t the best price.

Happy shopping. It IS possible to save money and eat healthier.

VLOG: GET READY WITH ME 💅🏻💄✨

My Clean(ish) & Green(ish) Skin/Makeup/Hair Routine

Did you know your skin is your largest organ? What you put in you body matters (and your skin acts as a filter from the inside, out) - but what you put on your skin matters as well. Whenever possible, I try and use products free from parabens, phthalates and synthetics. When these chemicals are added to our cosmetics, they can act as disruptors to our endocrine system. If I can put something healing and non-disruptive onto my skin and still take care of my skin, I’m gonna try! Bonus points for low waste, reusable or fully recyclable packaging. Here’s what I do to take care of my middle aged skin.
