🌊 this is one of my absolute favorite quotes that I share with my patients, friends, and MYSELF all the time. No, we simply cannot stop the waves of life - the twists and turns, stressors, losses, and miracles, the ups and downs…. Just like looking at the vast ocean, attending to all of life’s mysteries reminds us that there is an exceeding amount of stuff in this world over which we have no control. What we can control however is how we ride the waves.

🧘‍♀️Jon Kabat-Zinn, the creator of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) posits that a mindfulness practice is ideal for helping us ride the proverbial waves of life.

🏄‍♀️What are the internal and external resources that you have inside and around you that help YOU ride the waves of life?

While the coaching industry has taken great strides over the years towards integrating more evidence-based coaching approaches, there is still a lot of work to be done. Many coach training programs still lack strong foundations in science, and do little to incorporate research-informed tools, methodologies, or approaches for helping clients thrive.

For 20 years I've dedicated my career to rigorously testing ways to unlock creativity, intelligence, and our potential as human beings.

Now, for the very first time ever, I have compiled some of my greatest insights to bring the New Science of Self-Actualization to the field of professional coaching.

This immersive 3-day learning experience will introduce you to Self-Actualization Coaching, an approach intended to enhance your coaching practice by offering you evidence-based tools and insights from my research that will equip you to more effectively help your clients unlock their unique potential.

Self-Actualization Coaching is an approach to coaching that aims to help the client find their most alive and creative center of being, connect deeply with themselves, and become who they truly want to become.

Grounded in the foundational principles of humanistic psychology, Self-Actualization Coaching also draws from the latest psychological science, including the fields of positive psychology, coaching psychology, developmental psychology, personality psychology, neuroscience, and the science of creativity.

This one was a real joy to record. The legend Kelly Leonard of The Second City had Scott Barry Kaufman and me on his podcast, Getting to Yes, And. Kelly got to the heart of existential philosophy and how we experience time, how we engage on social media, and the importance of laughter. It was a real privilege to speak with him.
You can listen to it here or wherever you get your podcasts.

Guest: Scott Barry Kaufman and Jordyn Feingold | Kelly spends Valentine's Day with Scott Barry Kaufman and Jordyn Feingold to talk about their amazing new book "Choose Growth: A Workbook for Transcending Trauma, Fear, and Self-Doubt."

PGY2s practice Strengths Spotting in our module on Positive Psychotherapy! It is so invigorating to always learn more and appreciate positive psychology material in new ways, and bring this content to physicians!

After learning about and taking the VIA Survey, our co-residents identified one another’s top strengths. It was a beautiful exercise and now we are literate in the language of strengths to use in our own lives and with our patients!

To choose the path of growth is to integrate all the various parts of ourselves and uplift the completeness of our human experience.

28/11/2022

It is when we harmonize these parts of ourselves that we may cultivate greater compassion, connect more deeply with others, extract more meaning and joy from life’s lessons, and ultimately contribute to the world in ways that are authentic, gratifying, and synergistic with those around us.

It can be so challenging to live by our values in residency training. Residents exist in this liminal space as both learners and employees, confronting the limitations of our health care system with the wide eyes and idealism we honed as medical students.

As our eyes grow bleary from overwork and impostorism, the default is to retreat into "survival mode," dive head-first into patient care, boards studying, and simply trying to stay afloat. Without deliberate care to nurture ourselves and one another within this environment, it can be all-too-easy to lose ourselves.

"The most powerful drivers of our malcontent are rooted in systems, cultures, and outdated beliefs of illness and wellness that reduce humans to individual organ systems, often bereft of a psychosocial context. However, we cannot wait for others to step in and meet our needs. Perhaps a part of changing the system starts with us recognizing, committing to, and living by our own values. From there, our field just might grow alongside us."
I reflect on the 10 pearls that helped me not just stay afloat during my intern year, but sail.
