😴 The amount of sleep varies with age but seems to remain relatively close to one another later in life. The most sleep is required for newborns, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Their sleep range is about 10-17 hours. Once we get up to school age and teenagers, we still require more sleep at about 8-11 hours. This is mainly because all of the changes and growth our body goes through. Once we become young adults, sleep stays pretty consistent all the way to the 65+ range (About 7-9 hours).
_
_
💤 This information came directly from the national sleep foundation. CEO David Cloud said, “Sleep Recommendations will help individuals make sleep schedules that are within a healthy range. They also serve as a useful starting point for individuals to discuss their sleep with their healthcare providers.”

Most commonly a winging scapula can caused by Serratus anterior paralysis. This is due to damage of the thoracic nerve and can cause weakness of the Serratus anterior muscle. It can also cause problems for the trapezius or rhomboid muscles.
_
The winging scapula can affect ability to lift heavy objects and perform activities of daily living. Also, some people are just not happy with the way it looks. A quick way to test for this is have the patient forward flex their arms to the horizontal and push on a wall in a push-up motion.
_
Treatment for winging scapula:
1️⃣ Range of motion exercises should be implemented in the supine position. The supine position allows the weight of the body to prevent winging by compressing the scapula against the thorax and allows for full shoulder ROM
2️⃣ Wall slides with elbows at 90 degree angle.
3️⃣ Scapular push-ups in quadrupred position.
4️⃣ Planks- overemphasize pushing the ground away from you. This will help engage Serratus anterior

Training Frequency for Athletes by

_
❗Tag an athlete who can benefit from this information❗
_
_
🏈If you’re a competitive athlete and are lucky enough to have a strength and conditioning coach, chances are you will be following a training schedule similar to this.
_
_
🏀Playing a sport at the High School, College, and Professional level can be grueling on the body. Trying to train frequently as well as practice and play your sport can do more damage than good to your body and performance. This is why in season you’re in more of a maintenance phase with no more than 1-3 workouts per week. The off-season is where most of the athlete’s improvements will be made. Typically an athlete will train 4-6 times a week during this phase.
_
_
⛹️Of course this will vary depending on the demands of the sport you play as well as being a reserve player versus a starter.
_
_
❓If you have any questions on the training frequency or anything related, feel free to ask 👍🏻 _

𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀!
_
_
❓Are you motivated to achieve success (MAS) or a motivated to avoid failure (MAF)? Let me know below
_
_
Achievement motivation relates to an athlete’s desire to engage in competition or a social comparison. It has been theorized that people have opposing personality traits within themselves. The motive to achieve success (MAS) and the motive to avoid failure (MAF).
_
_
People who are MAS enjoy challenging situatuons and do not perceive them to be a threat. They are intrigued by situations that are uncertain. People who are MAF have a desire to protect their ego and not be embarrassed by failure. They enjoy situations where it is easy to achieve success. They also enjoy when situations are extremely difficult because they are not expected to succeed.
_
_
In order to help our athletes/patients succeed, we must be able to identify each person’s motivation. Someone who is motivated to achieve to success doesn’t need much help. For a motive to avoid failure athlete, we can help increase their chances for success. If a task in a competition or life seems too difficult, we could explain his/her responsibility to make goal attainment easier. If success is achieved, the MAF athlete may become more comfortable in highly competitive situations.

MUSCLE FIBER INVOLVEMENT IN SPORTS
_
❗Tag an athlete that plays one of these sports❗
_
_
💪🏻 Generally speaking we have two categories of muscle fibers. Type 1 slow twitch and Type 2 fast twitch. Type 2 fast twitch gets broken down further to type 2a and type 2x. Type 2x are pure fast-twitch. They contract extremely quickly. Type 2a are somewhere between slow and fast-twitch muscle fibers.
_
💪🏼 Type 2 contract faster and have a 25-75% greater potential for muscle growth than type 1 fibers. This is why elite athletes in sports such as basketball, baseball and football will have more type 2 fibers.
_
💪🏽 Type 1 or slow twitch contract slower and have a lower potential for muscle growth. Elite endurance atheltes such as runners, cyclers, and swimmers will have a higher proportion of slow twitch type 1 fibers.
_
💪 Your muscle fiber type can influence what sports you are naturally good at or whether you are fast and strong. Olympic sprinters have been shown to have about 80% fast twitch type 2 fibers. Elite marathon runners have about 80% type 1 slow twitch fibers. There is some evidence that you can slightly switch muscle fiber type due to training but it has been said not more than 10%. The research is still not entirely understood.
_
❓Which of these sports do you find yourself being better at naturally? Let me know ⬇️

HOW TO REDUCE ANKLE INJURIES
_
_
Ankle braces and taping help prevent ankle injuries but sometimes athletes rely on them too heavily. Overuse of the brace can weaken the ankle and predispose them to injury when not wearing a brace/tape. When athletes have sprained their ankle multiple times, their ligaments become laxed and they lose the integrity/stability that they once had. .
📼I personally have athletes go through a full ankle rehab program before I tape. The rehab program such as ankle theraband IV, EV, PF, DF and single leg stance is what will help strengthen and stabilize the ankle. (It also scares away the fakers that just want tape😉).
❓Do you put your athletes through a rehab program before taping? Besides the three exercises listed, what else do you like to incorporate into your ankle strengthening program? Let me know below! ⬇️

March is National athletic training month and athletic trainers are healthcare. The industrial setting is just one of the many areas that Athletic Trainers add value to.
_
👔Industrial athletic trainers develop and oversee programs designed to keep employees working at their maximum capacity. The Industrial athletic trainer brings great value to businesses by reducing health care and insurance costs, implementing injury prevention programs, and creating return to work programs. Many businesses currently employ athletic trainers, and I believe once the word spreads about the value we bring, the number will only grow.

ATs get a lot done in a short time!
_
_
_
🏈 We see it happen often when watching the NFL. A player gets hurt and the athletic trainers run on the field towards that athlete. Unfortunately the general public watching TV never get an in depth look of what’s going on when the athletic trainers check out the athlete. I think they would be pretty surprised that we can go through a full evaluation in such a short period of time while also figuring out the safest way to get the athlete off of the field.
_
I think it’s pretty impressive that we can perform on field evaluations so quickly and efficiently! Not to mention the pressure from coaches and/or it being an important game. What do you think ? Let me know⬇️
_
❗Feel free to save and share so people have a better idea of what we do when we run onto the field or court!
