Last Thursday, students attended NYCSHP’s last BOD Meeting under the current executive board. We were excited to learn about Vonvendi as treatment for von Willebrand disease. We also met up with some of the Touro alumni and celebrated this moment with our very own, Dr. Charrai Byrd.

Rare cancer patients make up about half of all people fighting cancer, but they often have limited or no treatment options because rare cancer research is drastically underfunded. Every single dollar is directly allocated to rare cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center within six months of the events.

Before the CE on Atopic Dermatitis, two P3 students from Touro College of Pharmacy, Diana Duong and Tinnie Liao-Ng Yan, provided a brief legislative update to pharmacists and pharmacy students. The legislative piece was on Provider‘s Status bill which was reintroduced to Congress this year. The bill, H.R.592/S. 109: The Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act will allow Medicare beneficiaries access to pharmacist-provided services under Medicare Part B and allow state-licensed pharmacists with a B.S. Pharm or a PharmD to be label as healthcare providers. The bill passed the necessary simple majority vote in the House of Representatives with 226 this month. The Senate has 45 cosponsors on this bill and will need 51 votes to meet the simple majority. We need to continue to build bipartisan support in the Senate and House of Representatives. Currently there are only 12 of the 27 New York House of Representatives are signed on as cosponsors. This is where we can take action. Get more information on the national advocacy group PharmacistsProvideCare.com and join NYCSHP local Grassroots Committee led by Maabo Kludze. Tell your friends, family and collegues to contact their local congressman and either encourage them to sign on to this important bill or thank them for their continued support.
