Happy 1st Monday of 2023!

Keys to remember as you attempt to become healthier and fitter in the new year:

📍Small consistent changes yield huge results over time. Set small achievable goals by adding a few changes 2-3x per week. Be consistent for 4 weeks then reassess. Log what you do in your calendar to hold yourself accountable.
📍Drink water!! 💦 First thing in the morning and before each meal have a glass of water.
📍Eat veggies & fruits with each meal!! 🥬🍎🥦🍌🥕 Minimize sugar and processed food.
📍Strength is the foundation for all activities. If you feel weak, have back/joint pain (after doc visit), can’t keep up with your kids, have trouble going up the stairs or carrying anything, add strength training to your life. If you don’t know where to start, hire a trainer. 💪🏽
📍Spend time barefoot at home. 👣

Coming out of winter hibernation straight into some wind resistance with renewed quarantine muscle!

Spent the past two months with consistent strength training, Zwifting(indoor cycling), weekly yoga, weighted stair climbing and not running, which resulted in weight gain/AKA increased muscle mass. I’ve learned how to manage my worsening bunions and how they affect the running gait and overall movement after they caused a knee injury. Happy to be running again just in time for spring! ☀️

The foot is where movement begins so optimal mobility of the foot/ankle complex and the stability of the arch should be an integral part of every strength program. 💪🏽👣

Took one for Team Humanity! I have never gotten a flu shot and work hard at keeping my immune system strong 24/7 so I’ve been whining about getting this shot since I scheduled it. If this is what it takes to get herd immunity and regain some sense of normalcy then I’m on board. Looking forward to the day we no longer have to wear a mask!

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.” —Anonymous

Anything worthwhile takes effort. The goal to reach the top and the curiosity of what I would see once I reached it, kept me going on our last and longest hike. Although by Friday I was really over it. No matter what the goal, whether big or small, once achieved, always feels satisfying.

So what are your goals for the day? Have you gotten up from your work station? Drank water? Ate something healthy? Worked out? Done a kind deed? Registered to vote?

Whatever it is, go get it!

Quick bodyweight workout before the long car ride home!

There is a method to the madness. Keys to an effective workout program design for athletic performance or strength and conditioning which naturally leads to weight loss:

1) Start with plyometric exercises (after a low intensity warm up). Not only do plyos burn calories, improve, agility, reaction time, power, strength and tendon strength, they also recruit more muscle fibers to improve the ex*****on of the movements in the rest of the workout.

2) Complete more complex exercises or exercises using more muscle groups first followed by least complex.

3) Work largest muscle groups first to smallest last:
Legs - with a squat, hinge or lunge
Back - with a pull
Chest - with a push
Shoulders/arm are worked during a push and pull so no need to isolate them when you are trying to save time. It’s best to keep complexity high unless you are rehabbing an injury or deconditioned.

4) Maintain neutral/correct postural alignment and core activation throughout every exercise.

This ensures optimal performance and smaller muscles do not get exhausted before the workout is over, causing incorrect form, ineffectiveness and/or injury.

In this workout:
Jump Squats
Jump Lunges
Squats
Single Leg Reverse Lunge
Single Leg Hip Hinge
Explosive Push Ups
Bent Over Rows
Assisted Handstand Plank with Leg Lifts or Hand Plank with feet elevated and Leg Lifts

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 During these times of uncertainty it helps to celebrate what we still have. There have to be some silver linings to the pandemic. One is that with less people out and about polluting the environment, Mother Earth is getting a chance to regenerate. The air quality in NYC and other major cities is significantly better and there is more wildlife in national parks.

I’m definitely a little jelly of the people in Colorado, the most active state in the U.S. The Rocky Mountains create an awe-inspiring playground. While we stay home with breaks in local parks, Coloradans are hiking/skinning up and skiing down endless trails while practicing social distancing. If you have somewhere nearby to escape to that exists in nature, be sure to take advantage. Being in nature soothes the soul!

Do your part to preserve the planet by being more mindful of what you purchase, how it’s made and where it will end up when you’re done with it. Consolidate online purchases to reduce your carbon footprint, recycle or donate whatever you can and moderate the air conditioning.

Stay strong, stay healthy and stay mindful!

and the start of week 6 of the NYC lockdown. There has been an increase in low back pain in individuals who have been sitting on couches or chairs that are not ergonomic and meant for 8 hour work days. Time to stand or sit on the floor! Fill those empty Amazon or Instacart boxes with books to create a stand for your laptops/work stations. Alternate with sitting up at your coffee table. Keep your spine and posture in neutral alignment with core activation to decrease the risk of low back pain. Also, exercise, move or stretch daily. Staying sedentary is lethal! Low back stretches to follow. Now get back to work or doing something creative!

Keeping a routine is a helpful strategy for getting through these tough times in quarantine. I started practicing yoga after becoming incredibly tight from endless hours of triathlon training. Mondays were an ideal day to practice to help recovery after the weekend’s long workouts. Maintaining an optimal range of motion in the joints increases strength, power and speed and reduces the risk of injury.
The wheel is my favorite backbend. It offsets all the crouching done over the bike, computer or electronic device. Plus it’s always fun to be upside down!

Stay safe, stay inside & stay bendy!

Hope you’re working out at home so you don’t become weak, immuno-suppressed and depressed.
Did you know a gallon of water weighs 8lbs? That same gallon filled with dirt or sand weighs 12lbs for dumbbells.
I’m doing virtual sessions to maintain .
Feel free to contact me for more stay at home workout ideas.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has been running the same federal entity through some of the worst crises of the last half-century: AIDS, anthrax, swine flu, Ebola and, now, a coronavirus pandemic. He’s also been running for almost the entire time.
