Curious what's brewing at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research this spooky season? 🔬🎃 Scientists, Naveen Jayaprakash and Nicole Carpentiere, gathered popular Halloween candies, combined them with a special "zombie solution," and used powerful microscopes to reveal what these sugary treats look like up close.

Microscopy is an incredibly powerful tool, whether our researchers are discovering the mysteries of Halloween treats or using these advanced instruments to unravel the complex structures of the human vagus nerve.

After losing several family members to cancer, these three resilient women took a proactive approach for their futures.

Inheriting the BRCA1 gene mutation, all three women—aunt Teresa, mother Janet and daughter Emma—had undergone double mastectomies (Janet and Emma had preventive mastectomies, Teresa had breast and ovarian cancer) and received breast reconstructive surgery from Mark Smith, MD, at Northwell Health's Friedman Center for Breast and Lymphatic Surgery.

Their journey showcases the significant advancements in cancer care, from a time of limited options to today's era of proactive genetic testing, preventive surgeries and advanced reconstructive techniques.

It's a powerful reminder of the importance of knowing your family history and the hope that modern medicine offers.
