Have you ever noticed how much time you spend sitting down? Studies show that on average we’re sitting for more than 7 hours a day.
Here are some tips that can help prevent back pain:
• Maintain good posture with the help of a lumbar roll
• Every hour, get up and move around for about 5 minutes
• Take a breaks to stretch

Julie Marley is the only physical therapist in Delaware that has received her Diploma in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy!

There is a specific training program that therapists need to go through to become skilled at the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. Some therapists use a little of the method, but not completely as it is intended. At SOS Physical Therapy, we have the highest training available in this method. Understanding your symptoms is foundational in our ability to help you resolve your problem. A good assessment starts with taking a good history. At SOS PT, we take the time to listen to your story and hear your experience. This is a vital part of our initial evaluation as it helps guide our physical examination. We use a response-based assessment known as the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. Your history, along with your movement response, is essential to determining what exercise is right for you. To learn more check out our blog!

The check engine light popped up on your dashboard. You want to do something about it, but you don’t know what it means or how long it will take to resolve. All you can think is that the car still drives fine for now, so you decide to delay addressing the issue to see if the light will just go away on its own.

Your body consistently gives you warning signs when things aren't quite right, but sometimes it's hard to know how to address the root of the problem. Let us help you! We are experts in musculoskeletal care and can assess, diagnose the root of you problem, and help determine the best path forward.

Yes, proper form or body mechanics when you are exercising is very important. It often times minimizes the load or stress put on your joints and allows your muscles to functional properly and to the best of their ability. It makes sense to practice proper form with squatting or dead lifts or yoga. But when you consider the amount of time you spend in these positions, it is only a very small fraction of your day. What about considering proper form when sitting at work or doing dishes. What about considering proper body mechanics when picking up your children or working in your garden. We spend so much of our day doing these activities without giving a second thought to the way we move or the stress put on our joints as a result. These everyday movements and tasks often lead to musculoskeletal issues, and even small changes in the way you move can have a large impact on your musculoskeletal health.

The following is a summary of the treatment of a 60 year old patient with left upper arm pain x 2 weeks with a significant loss of shoulder ROM. This patient had increased pain with all shoulder movements and was unable to elevate her arm more than 30 degrees. She was unable to carry anything in her left arm and was significantly limited with getting dressed or doing her hair because of her pain and limited ROM. She was unable work despite that fact that she had a desk job and worked at a computer because of the intense pain with elevating her left arm to type on the keyboard.

At her initially evaluation this patient could not tolerate any movement of her shoulder, actively or passively, due to her pain which she described as severe. However, upon screening the cervical and thoracic spine, we found that repeated left thoracic rotation significantly improved her shoulder flexion and abduction ROM to about 90 degrees.

On visit 2 her ROM remained better and she still responded best to this same thoracic rotation exercise. She increased the amount of repetition she was doing with this exercise and by visit 3 her shoulder ROM was remaining better even though she still had pain with the movement. At this visit we were able to progress her home exercise to thoracic extension and by visit 5 she had full shoulder ROM and strength, and was pain-free. While this is not the case with all patients that come in with limited and pain shoulder movements, by taking 10 minutes at her initial evaluation to screen her spine, we were able to avoid sending her down a treatment pathway that may have resulted in more imaging, injections or even surgery for her “shoulder” pain. After visit 5 she was able to return to work!

Direction matters!

Whether its navigating the road or assessing musculoskeletal pain, the direction you are going matters. Most musculoskeletal pain feels better with movement. As we go through our assessment process we are trying to determine which movement it feels best with. Too much movement in too many directions can be confusing. Some might feel better and some feel worse. But consistent movement in one specific direction at a time often gives us the best result.

At SOS PT we provide 1-on-1 treatment. Every evaluation starts with a thorough history. When talking to patients about their complaints, there are many things to consider when trying to understand their problem, but the most important information regarding diagnosis comes from the following questions:
1. Where are your symptoms?
2. Are they constant or intermittent?
3. How long have they been there?
4. What makes you worse?
5. When you are worse, do you lose motion?
