When I was a Master’s student at NSU, I was able to successfully defend my thesis research, which looked at the awareness of stroke signs, symptoms and risk factors in the Black community. This was 1998, and here we are in 2026, with new research showing that we STILL need to be aware of, AND doing something about changing these same modifiable risk factors. The scarier thing about my post, though is, it’s not just isolated to the Black community because our risk is up worldwide; particularly for people UNDER 55!!
In my community, I have particularly noted the vast increase of restaurants around town. Don’t get me wrong, having varying types of food to eat is great, but when we look at information such as this write up from UCLA, we need to understand that all food is not good food. What we put in our bodies, how we move and how much we move our bodies, AND how much and how well we rest, all factor into stroke occurrences. Don’t neglect your having high BP issues, it won’t just randomly go away because you are ignoring it. As a NeuroPT, I have seen it way too many times!!
Be proactive!! Change what you can, as soon as you can, and if you need help figuring it out, reach out to me for a consultation. Let’s do a better job of being better to ourselves!!!
