Are you looking for balance? As soon as the holiday season rolls around, it's go, go, go and that can become overwhelming very quickly.

If you find yourself losing balance, these four tips can help:

▪️ It's okay to say NO to invites
▪️ Determine your priorities
▪️ Plan ahead, be reasonable
▪️ Acknowledge your emotions

to all first responders in our community and across the nation!

One of the things I'm most thankful for this year is for our police and firefighters who selflessly protect our communities; oftentimes at the expense of their own mental wellness.

I wish you all a happy and safe Thanksgiving with your loved ones. 🤝

Having the ability to be a part of the progression of providing officers with readily available mental wellness resources and information is so imperative to the field of public safety.

Thank you Public Safety Peer Support Association for inviting First Responder Wellness and I to be a part of your Wellness on the Frontlines Conference & Exhibit earlier this month! 🤝

Such a great honor to bring awareness to the myths and realities of first responder addiction theories at Public Safety Peer Support Association’s Wellness on the Front Line Conference & Exhibit last week!

As first responder culture is rooted in traditions that involve self-medication for work-related PTSD, conferences like such are imperative to bring light to the realities of struggles our men & women in uniform often battle in the dark.

Thank you PSPSA for inviting First Responder Wellness to such an important event! I am appreciative. 🤝

Today I recognize all the contributions first responders in our nation make to protect our communities, oftentimes at the expense of their own mental wellness.

The stressful situations our men and women in uniform face on a daily basis, don’t always get the recognition they deserve. I appreciate you. Our team First Responder Wellness appreciates you! This is your day. 🤝

At First Responder Wellness we offer inpatient/residential programs tailored to the goals of each client.

Inpatient treatment allows clients to live on-site during their care; which provides a safe space that aligns with recovery and healing without distraction. This can be an environment that helps clients avoid influences and temptations that may trigger substance use in their daily lives.

The benefits of inpatient care include:

▪️24 hour care for detox, mental health & recovery
▪️Structured treatment, tailored to the individual
▪️Safe, stable housing and medical attention
▪️Distraction-free environments, full focus on healing

Asking for help is difficult, especially for first responders suffering from PTSD, substance abuse and/or mental health conditions.

First responders often carry the belief that they're the helpers, not the ones who should be seeking help. It's imperative that we normalize asking for assistance and what that might look like. Here's some tips to help with planning:

▪️Talk to a trusted loved one, family or friend
▪️Be specific about why you need to talk, set a time
▪️Do not apologize when asking for help
▪️Expect them to ask questions

After opening up and sharing the struggles you've been keeping to yourself with a trusted loved one, it can feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. You might even begin to feel less alone, knowing someone else is there showing support. 💯📲

Is it possible to change negative habits?

Short answer: of course it is. When attempting to break a habit, it is crucial to be completely honest with yourself about your behavior.

It can be helpful to make a written statement about the habit that you wish to stop engaging in. By writing it down, you will be forced to specifically address the habit that you wish to break, which will help you internalize your desire to create change.

Here's a few more tips to assist you in breaking a habit:

▪️Start off with modest changes
▪️Log your progress
▪️Don't let setbacks deter you
▪️Celebrate victories

At First Responder Wellness, we know how debilitating it can be to live with depression. Despite being one of the most common mental health disorders, depression is still stigmatized, and many avoid seeking help for this reason, especially for first responders, like yourself.

While feeling down or sad is a normal part of life, when the following sysmtomssymptoms begin to be an everyday occurrence...it may be time to seek assistance:

▪️ Decreased mood and often feeling sad or empty
▪️ Feeling lost, hopeless and anxious
▪️ Changes in sleep patterns and appetite
▪️ Difficulty concentrating
▪️ Suicidal thoughts

Maintaining personal mental health and wellness can be difficult if the environment around a person is not conducive to it. That's why it's essential for various first responder agencies and departments to focus on promoting a culture of wellness.

Some ways first responder agency's organizational leadership can strengthen a culture of wellness include making employees aware of mental health conditions often faced by first responders, providing peer support, encouraging physical fitness programing and healthy eating habits, educating them on resiliency and offering community outreach programs. ✔️
