At BWB&O, we are proud to recognize and honor the cultures, histories, and immeasurable contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the globe.
What began as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 was expanded to a complete month-long celebration in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The month starts on September 15—a date that marks the independence of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile follow shortly after on September 16 and 18. This month is a time to reflect, celebrate, and elevate the voices and stories that continue to shape our communities and industries.
A Legacy of Leadership & Impact:
César Chávez (Mexican American)
A Mexican American labor leader and civil rights activist, Chávez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association. His tireless advocacy for better working conditions transformed labor rights in America and continues to inspire social justice movements today.
Sonia Sotomayor (Puerto Rican-American)
As the first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Sotomayor has been a trailblazer for equity, representation, and the rule of law. Her story is one of perseverance, brilliance, and profound impact.
Rubén Blades (Panamanian)
A Latin music legend, actor, and political activist, Rubén Blades brought global attention to salsa music infused with powerful messages of social justice, identity, and Latin pride. His art has inspired generations throughout Latin America and beyond.
Let’s continue to honor heritage, champion diversity, and embrace unity—this month and every day.
