Teaching your child to functionally communicate what they want and need will lead to a decrease in most maladaptive behaviors.

Communication is not just using your words to get access to what you want. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
Children will learn to communicate by engaging in a tantrum, throwing objects, hitting themselves or others, or whining.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
OR learn to communicate using signs, gestures, speech, or picture cards, to gain access to what they want/need and what they want to avoid or get away from.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
It is up to us to teach them to communicate what they want using more appropriate means rather than engaging in maladaptive behaviors.​​​​​​​​
