New to Korean spas? Here's everything you need to know about jjimjilbang etiquette β so you can relax without second-guessing yourself.
SHOWER BEFORE SOAKING
This is the most important one. In the wet spa, always rinse thoroughly before entering any pool. It's a sign of respect for the shared space and everyone in it.
IT'S MORE SOCIAL THAN YOU THINK
If you're expecting a silent, Western-style spa, adjust your expectations. Jjimjilbangs are traditionally places where friends and families gather, talk, and reconnect. Conversation is welcome β just stay mindful of others who may be resting nearby.
NO PHONES IN PRIVATE AREAS
Photography and recording are never allowed in locker rooms or bathhouses. These are private spaces. Respect others' privacy at all times β no exceptions.
EVERY BODY IS WELCOME
This is a judgment-free zone. Korean bathhouse culture is rooted in equality, not comparison. Leave insecurities at the door β you'll find that most guests do the same.
MODESTY IN SHARED SPACES
In co-ed areas, stay in your provided uniform. Keep public displays of affection minimal out of respect for families and other guests.
EMBRACE THE CULTURE
Some things may feel unfamiliar β the communal bathing, the heat, the rituals. That's okay. Approach with curiosity, not hesitation. Koreans have practiced this for centuries. You're not just visiting a spa β you're stepping into a tradition.
The goal isn't perfection β it's presence. You're here to rest, reset, and feel renewed. Everyone was a first-timer once. You've got this.
