Calling ALL Doulas! We need your help today! The governor is about to sign legislation about our doula profession and allow the state to screen and mandate our certification and define our scope as a doula. This new law states "proposed legislation allows for DOH to set the process for verification of doula certification, it is assumed that the certification fee will be the same as for professional midwifery, which is $500. Assuming all doulas will seek state certification, there will be an increase in state revenue of $70,000. It requires licensure renewals biennially with a fee of $710, resulting in an increase in state revenue every two years of $99,400"
They want to sign into law to dictate our profession here in the state. Your livelihood is at risk as the governor is set to sign this today or tomorrow.
Please call the governor today (615) 741-2001! Tell him to veto SB 0394/ HB 0738. We don't want them to decide the doula profession for us. In the bill they assume that there are only 140 doulas in the whole state, similar to midwives... which is inaccurate. Now is the time to stand up and let your voice be heard. Stop this bill now before it is too late. This is legislation without representation. There is one doula who is pushing this legislation and she is not concerned with us as a whole. Don't let her initiative affect all of us.
I have another solution which is to create a nonprofit that represents ALL doulas in TN.. more about this later.
Will you please call today! (615) 741-2001 and say "This is (name). I am a professional doula in TN. Please have the governor veto SB 0394/ HB 0738. This will affect our livelihood in a negative way. We don't want this legislation. We have been unfairly represented."
