As my independent license application is off with the department of health for processing in an effort to pursue adding insurance to my practice (to increase access), here is something I am struggling with tonight:

This was me in 2019, shortly before starting grad school, but a few years into mental health work. Between 2019 and 2026, the average reimbursement rates from insurance companies to providers has only increased about 12%. Inflation during that time? Over 26%.

Expenses include office rent, malpractice and liability insurance, business licensing, electronic medical record, website, website domain, banking fees, annual licensing fees, annual CEU fees, hippa compliant email and workspace, office supplies, marketing, etc. Between these expenses and taxes, I am only able to pay myself a small fraction of what comes in. After my student loan payments and my own cost of living, it's extremely alarming trying to wrap my head around how I will be reimbursed enough to keep things afloat.

This system is truly a mess. I'm working hard to make local care accessible, and there are so many limitations to that beyond my control. I'm so happy to be in private practice and leaning in to what I uniquely have to offer. And, learning to navigate this system, I feel, is going to be a wild ride.

Office Views!
I have been happily settling in to my office at the Mount Si Wellness Collective over the last couple months, but slowly as I have been wrapping up other responsibilities. In just a couple more short weeks, I will get to spend a lot more time here!

I am opening up Monday session times (in the office or walk and talk), including a couple of after school spots for teens. I also have a Wednesday lunch hour spot available.

Yesterday I passed my ASWB Clinical Exam, one of the many required steps towards "independent" licensure. This is a 4 hour intensive exam on basically all of the textbook knowledge from grad school, except in my State I wasn't able to take it until multiple years after graduating 😳

Looking forward to using that time I spent studying the last several months towards more interesting and relevant parts of my job.

Something most people don't know is that it takes more than just grad school to practice as a therapist. The process extends years beyond graduation, includes multiple 'steps' or 'levels' of licensure, 3000 hours of supervised experience, AND this exam.
