Mind-Eye Institute

Mind-Eye Institute A neuro-optometry integration specialist helping families for learning and brain health. Yet, peripheral sight is rarely evaluated.

How does Mind-Eye testing differ from other optometric evaluation methods? Most standard optometric evaluations rely on a system developed in the 1800’s. This 150-year-old testing system addresses only the clearness – 20/20 – of central eyesight by having the patient consciously look at non-moving targets across a darkened room. But, only about six percent of visual awareness comes from this kind of conscious focus on specific objects (see white ray in the diagram below). The majority of environmental signals passing through our retinas emanate from peripheral space – the space all around us (note the blue and green fields in the diagram). The Mind-Eye Institute does not use central (20/20) eyesight as an endpoint; we evaluate comfort of peripheral eyesight and eye-ear balance, as well as hand-eye coordination and visual perceptual skills. Comprehensive evaluation includes measurements of visual performance, visual processing capabilities and sensory integration with other body systems. The goal is to find optimal ways of lessening symptoms or

What kinds of patients does the Mind-Eye Institute assess? The Mind-Eye Institute helps patients 1) redevelop visual skills during recovery from debilitating symptoms of brain injuries, concussions and other neurological disorders, including stroke, and 2) build new skills in patients who have been labeled with “learning, sensory integration or developmental delay problems,” such as ADHD and dyslexia. Mounting scientific research and clinical experience demonstrate that using an individualized mix of therapeutic lenses, filters and prisms to vary the way light disperses across a patient’s retina – particularly the peripheral retina – can influence brain wiring in ways that may be useful in rehabilitation. How young is the youngest patient evaluated? The Mind-Eye Institute will test patients as young as four months of age. The intent is to assess potential warning signs, before the child starts developing bad habits in visual skills that are required in life (depth perception, reaching for objects, and sitting up). What does Mind-Eye testing include? Kinds of testing performed will depend on patient needs. However, a comprehensive, first-appointment visual-processing evaluation is likely to consist of a refractive examination to check eyesight, including aiming, focusing and eye-teaming abilities; assessment of eye movement control at conscious, subconscious and unconscious levels; and a spatial awareness analysis, using Mind-Eye Institute’s patented Z-Bell Test℠. The Z-Bell Test℠ is a revolutionary method of checking a patient’s overall awareness of surrounding space and his or her integration of visual processing with awareness of auditory space. Contact lens wearers are tested in two ways: with and without contact lenses. We also assess pupil function, internal visualization, various visual perceptual skills and tolerance levels to changes in visual space. Of course, eye health is also assessed, including testing for glaucoma and confrontation visual fields. If further testing is required, we have an ocular coherence tomography instrument with angiography capabilities (somewhat like an MRI for the eyeball) and corneal topography to assess any deteriorations on the corneal surface. This is in addition to ocular photography of the inside or outside of the eyes. Each person is tested on the basis of what they need; not all people require all testing. What kind of health insurance does the Mind-Eye Institute accept? Because of the nature of Mind-Eye’s unique tests and advanced procedures, many elements of the examination are not covered under standard health insurance plans. Following your initial appointment, you will receive an itemized invoice, listing optometric procedure, diagnosis and therapeutic codes. You can then submit this information to your insurance carrier for evaluation and full or partial reimbursement, depending on your coverage plan. Our patient care advocates can assist you through this process. For more information, please go to www.mindeye.com or call us at 847-501-2020

"20/20 vision" doesn't mean "perfect vision."

Plot twist: The 20/20 test is over 150 years old and only measures your ability to see clearly at a distance straight ahead.

What it DOESN'T tell you:

-How your brain uses that visual information
-Whether your eyes work together as a team
-If you can track smoothly across a page
-How well you process peripheral vision
-If your visual and auditory systems are synchronized

Translation: You can ace the eye chart and still struggle with reading, balance, focus, and feeling comfortable in your environment.

This is why standard eye exams miss so many functional vision problems—they're only testing a tiny fraction of how your visual system actually works.

At Mind-Eye Institute, we test how your brain processes and integrates visual information. Because seeing clearly is just the beginning.

Ever been told you have "perfect vision" but still struggle? You're not imagining it. 👇

DID YOU KNOW? Your eyes are literally brain tissue!

The retina is the only part of your central nervous system you can see from the outside. That's why we don't just "test your eyes"—we assess your brain's processing.

Here's the wild part: Your brain has TWO visual systems:
System 1: "What is it?" (like reading this post)
System 2: "Where is it?" (like scrolling through your feed)
When these systems are out of sync, it can cause anxiety, confusion, and fatigue, even if you have "perfect" 20/20 vision.

The kicker? Over 90% of all information coming into your brain is visual. If your visual processing is inefficient, your brain has to work overtime, leading to headaches, fatigue, and brain fog.

This is why at Mind-Eye Institute, we don't just check if you can see the letters on the chart. We evaluate how your entire brain processes visual and auditory information.

Charlie's Journey: From Struggling to Thriving

Charlie struggles every day. He had initially been diagnosed with ADHD, dreaded writing assignments, and began each school day with anxiety instead of excitement.

Even with school accommodations, tutoring, behavioral interventions, and medication adjustments, Charlie still struggled with:
- Losing his place while reading
- Difficulty copying from the board
- Homework taking hours longer than expected
- Frequent headaches and eye rubbing
- Something was still missing.

After a comprehensive neuro-optometric assessment at Mind-Eye Institute including our patented eye-ear connection testing, we discovered the missing piece: Charlie's brain was misprocessing visual input. His eyes weren't working effectively with his ears, creating stress that impacted his entire learning experience.

The transformation was remarkable:
✨ Homework time cut in half
✨ From avoiding books to choosing them
✨ From dreading writing to feeling confident
✨ Monday mornings became opportunities, not obstacles

“Mind-Eye Institute testing may seem unconventional, but it truly changed my life. The eyeglasses gave me a new confidence. They have not only impacted me, but they have helped me have a positive impact on other people.” - Charlie

Today, Charlie is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. He's proof that with the right understanding and support, challenges can become strengths.

If your child is struggling despite interventions, inefficient visual processing might be the piece you're missing.

Charlie Bertrand of Glen Ellyn, Ill. is in the business of saving lives, and he credits it all to his “brain” eyeglasses. In fact, Charlie contends that he ...

October is Dyslexia & Dyspraxia Awareness Month

Both conditions involve challenges in how the brain processes and integrates information and vision processing plays a critical role that's often overlooked.

DYSLEXIA & VISION PROCESSING:
Research shows up to 80% of individuals with dyslexia have underlying vision processing issues.

How we help: We identify and address visual tracking problems, eye-ear connections, and visual processing speed that make reading feel exhausting. When these are corrected, many see significant improvements in reading fluency and comprehension.

DYSPRAXIA & VISUAL-MOTOR INTEGRATION:
Studies indicate that children with dyspraxia struggle significantly with visual-motor tasks.

How we help: We assess and treat the disconnect between visual input and motor output. By retraining how the brain integrates visual information with movement, coordination improves and daily tasks become less overwhelming.

At Mind-Eye Institute, we understand the visual processing differences that make everyday tasks challenging. Our comprehensive neuro-optometric assessments identify eye-ear disconnects and subtle visual processing issues that are not tested during typical examinations.

The result: Reading becomes easier. Coordination improves. Frustration decreases. Confidence grows.

If you or your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia or dyspraxia and are still struggling despite interventions, vision processing assessment could be the missing piece.

🧡October is ADHD Awareness Month🧡

The Vision Connection Many Families Miss

Is it ADHD, visual processing issues, or both? The symptoms often look similar:
Difficulty concentrating → Attention issues OR visual stress?
Restlessness during reading → Hyperactivity OR eye strain?
Avoiding homework → Inattention OR visual processing challenges?
Trouble following instructions → Processing issues OR visual tracking problems?

Here's what research shows: Children with ADHD are 3X more likely to have convergence insufficiency and visual processing issues. Nearly 16% of children with vision problems have been diagnosed with ADHD, compared to only 8% without vision issues.

Yet standard eye exams and typical ADHD assessments often miss this critical connection of eyes with ears.

At Mind-Eye Institute, we help families understand a bigger sensory picture. When visual processing issues are identified and addressed alongside ADHD treatment, children may experience significant improvements in concentration, reading, homework completion, and confidence.

It's not about choosing between types of ADHD treatment, but it's about addressing multiple factors that may impact learning and attention.

If your child is struggling despite interventions, comprehensive visual assessment might reveal the missing piece.

Still struggling with light or sound sensitivity months after your concussion?
You're not alone, and you're not "making it up."

The numbers tell the story:
70% of TBI patients report photophobia (light sensitivity)
76% experience phonophobia (sound sensitivity)
These symptoms can persist for years without proper treatment

What's really happening: After a concussion, your brain's ability to filter and process sensory information becomes overwhelmed. The everyday sights and sounds that once felt normal now feel intense and uncomfortable. This isn't weakness, it's a real neurological response where your brain's filtering system has been disrupted.

Here's the hope: With personalized neuro-optometric assessment and treatment, these sensitivities may be able to improve. Your symptoms are valid and they deserve individualized understanding.

At Mind-Eye Institute, we address the eye-ear disconnects that cause sensory processing challenges. We want to help experience bright stores, loud restaurants, or sunny days without symptoms.

Feeling like a piece is missing?

Research reveals something crucial: Eye movement impairments are more prevalent in post-concussion testing than in standard neurocognitive testing.

What this means: Your eyes hold the missing puzzle piece that standard tests often overlook.

Comprehensive testing of how your brain controls eye movements can reveal:
-Tracking problems with moving objects
-Difficulty shifting focus between distances
-Eyes not working together effectively
-Slower visual processing speed
-Eye-Ear disconnects

The bottom line: When cognitive tests say you're "fine" but you're still struggling with headaches, brain fog, dizziness, or visual discomfort, your eyes may hold the key to solving your improvement puzzle.

At Mind-Eye Institute, we look beyond standard assessments to help find the missing pieces.. Because it shouldn't stop when the tests say you're "normal."

Today is Dyslexia Awareness Day and October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Let’s clear up the myths:
❌ Dyslexia is NOT about intelligence
❌ Dyslexia is NOT about lack of effort
❌ Dyslexia is NOT something children can simply “grow out of”

✅ Dyslexia IS a neurological difference in how the brain processes language, visual information, and the timing between what is seen and heard.

Reading is more than recognizing letters. It involves bridging visual memory with auditory memory within an overall context, and when visual and auditory signals aren’t properly synchronized, students may read slowly, skip words, or guess.

At Mind-Eye, we know dyslexia often involves:
Visual processing challenges
Tracking difficulties while reading
Problems with visual-spatial awareness
Eye movement coordination issues

Our approach addresses the integration between auditory and visual processing that are the hallmark of dyslexia, giving students the tools they need to unlock their potential and thrive academically.

What is the Mind-Eye Institute All About?

The Mind-Eye Institute is recognized worldwide for its work in neuro-optometric rehabilitation, including assessment of “retinal processing.” Intact retinal processing enables people to understand and interact appropriately with the world around them. It also allows their brain to determine whether surroundings are safe, and it links light input with circadian sleep rhythms and neurotransmitter levels. If brain circuitry is out of sync, however, because it has been disrupted by injury or disease or is simply under-developed, people can become confused about their surrounding environment and exhibit inappropriate reactions and responses.

The team at the Mind-Eye Institute helps patients rebuild visual skills – or develop new ones. The mind-eye connection is unique to each person’s processing system and experiences. Neuro-optometric rehabilitation uses mind-eye testing – versus conventional eye health and eyesight testing – to prescribe therapeutic eyeglasses and other optometric interventions on an individualized basis. Those interventions are designed to balance sensory systems. The balanced systems calm the nervous system, allowing the person to interact with their environment and think more clearly. How does Mind-Eye testing differ from other optometric evaluation methods?

Most standard optometric evaluations rely on a system developed in the 1800’s.
