👋👋Hello Lewisburg, Northumberland, and Sunbury community!
I'm a Behavior Analyst and I am looking for recommendations for a nail salon in the Lewisburg, Northumberland, or Sunbury area.
I am hoping to find a relatively small, friendly, and professional salon where I can schedule an appointment to take a young client. The goal of this outing is to work on building functional living skills by attending to a professional service, specifically getting our nails painted.
The ideal place would be one that is generally quiet and perhaps less overwhelming for a first-time community experience. We'll be making an appointment and will, of course, be respectful of the salon's time and environment and pay for services even if we dont tolerate the whole visit.
Why is an activity like this so valuable for functional skills?
1. Reinforcing Tolerating and Waiting- Attending a service requires sitting still, waiting for the technician to complete different steps (filing, polishing, drying), and enduring a non-preferred sensation (like a file or the smell of polish) for an extended period to get a highly preferred outcome (painted nails). This directly translates to essential daily life skills like waiting in line at the grocery store or tolerating a doctor's visit.
2. Practicing Social and Communication Skills: This activity is a perfect way to practice functional communication skills like greeting a service provider, politely requesting a service or color, responding appropriately to questions (e.g., "Is this pressure okay?"), and paying/tipping a service provider. These skills are vital for successful, independent engagement in any community setting.
If you know of a quiet, welcoming salon that you think would be a great fit for this therapeutic activity, please drop the name and location in the comments or share!
