MaineHealth Ripley Health Center, part of MaineHealth Stephens Hospital, offers Bright Bodies—a 12-week program affiliated with Let's Go! that uses the Smart Moves™ curriculum which has been shown in studies to improve health. It is a healthy lifestyle and family approach for children ages 6-17 who have extra weight or obesity. Children and their families will learn about food intake and activity levels, while gathering concrete skills to promote healthier behaviors and lifestyles along with building self-esteem, confidence and strengthening family dynamics. The Pediatric Care Team is excited to introduce the newest member of our care family: Gary, our official “Patient Turkey Representative.” Gary may be small in stature, but he brings big personality, four little turkey helpers, and plenty of gobbles to brighten our patient spaces.

Gary’s role is an important one. He is responsible for spreading cheer, showcasing his vibrant feathers, and creating opportunities for connection during what can sometimes be a challenging time for our patients. Children have helped Gary grow his feather collection by coloring and adding their own unique, creative designs.

This simple, playful project has brought joy, engagement, and a welcome distraction for many patients. It has not only sparked smiles and laughter, but also provided a meaningful way for children to feel involved and connected during their visit.
