With temperatures regularly reaching the 90s lately, it is important to keep an eye on your elderly loved ones, family members, and neighbors!
Being hot for too long can cause the onset of hyperthermia. According to the National Institute on Aging, most people who die from hyperthermia are over the age of 50.
What puts someone at higher risk?
- Heart or blood vessel problems
- Poorly working sweat glands or changes in your skin caused by aging
- Heart, lung, or kidney disease
- Some heart and high blood pressure medicines
- Being either overweight or underweight
While the elderly are more prone to diseases caused by extreme heat, there are things that can be done to lower the risk!
- Drink plenty of liquids, such as water or fruit/vegetable juice
- Keep your house as cool as possible
- If your house is hot, visit somewhere that has air condition such as the shopping mall, library, or friend/family member's house
- Dress for the weather
- Avoid crowded places
- Avoid outside exercise
Heat related disease/injuries are avoidable if you are mindful of the situation! Check in on your older loved ones and neighbors. Offer them your cold home for comfort or make sure that they are hydrating themselves.
Stay safe, and stay cool!
