In the spring, I walked by so many luscious, blossoming trees, completely wrapped up in the reverie of the season. Now, as I walk by these same beautiful trees, bearing fruit and bits of gold upon their leaves, I realize that we readily forget how much we are seasonal by nature too. We love to romanticize the beginning blossoms of new growth, but find it so much harder to accept all that happens in between, until we see the fruits of our labor. This tree did not judge and shame itself, and count the hours, and set timers and to-do lists to chart its growth, comparing itself to the other trees nearby, anxious about what weather may come next. It’s simply a tree, passing through its seasons here on earth, growing where it was planted. We are simply human beings, part of this magical, mysterious, seasonal planet too. So much of our growth is unseen and unappreciated. What if we believed in ourselves and each other, to do what we all do naturally, just as we are. What would that feel like? I’d like to live in that world, wouldn’t you? I hope that this little reminder can be tucked into your back pocket when you need it. Being hard on ourselves day after day won’t get us to the finish line any faster, but it will certainly diminish the beauty of the moment, take a breath, and just be human.
