Potassium: A Key Nutrient for Growing Kids
Why potassium matters for children

Potassium is a mineral that helps your child:

Keep a healthy blood pressure

Support heart and muscle function

Balance salt (sodium) in the body

Support normal growth and hydration

Many kids today don’t get enough potassium because processed foods are high in salt but low in potassium.

🧂 Salt isn’t the only issue

Salt raises blood pressure more when potassium intake is low.

High salt + low potassium = more strain on the heart and blood vessels

Kids who eat more potassium-rich foods early in life may have lower blood pressure as teens and adults.

🥔 Best potassium foods for kids

(Approximate potassium per serving)

⭐ Very good sources

Baked or mashed potato (with skin): ~900 mg

Sweet potato: ~540 mg

White beans or lentils (½–1 cup): ~350–700 mg

Cooked spinach (½ cup): ~400 mg

Avocado (½–1 whole): ~350–700 mg

👍 Easy kid-friendly options

Banana: ~420 mg

Yogurt (plain or lightly sweetened): ~350–400 mg

Milk: ~350 mg per cup

Orange or orange slices: ~250 mg

Salmon or fish sticks (baked): ~400–500 mg

🍽️ Simple ways to add potassium every day

Serve fruit at breakfast, not just cereal or toast

Choose potatoes or sweet potatoes instead of fries or chips

Add beans to soups, tacos, or pasta

Offer yogurt instead of packaged snacks

Include a fruit or vegetable with every meal

Small changes add up quickly.

🎯 How much potassium do kids need?

Approximate daily goals:

Toddlers: ~2,000 mg/day

School-age kids: ~2,300–3,000 mg/day

Teens: ~3,000–3,500 mg/day

Most kids get much less than this — especially picky eaters.

⚠️ Important safety note

Do not give potassium supplements unless instructed by a doctor

Food sources are safest and best

Children with kidney or heart conditions should follow medical guidance

The takeaway for parents

Potassium helps balance salt, supports healthy blood pressure, and protects your child’s heart.
Whole foods matter more than supplements.
