Asian Health Services is proud to be featured in The New England Journal of Medicine's Perspective Series of Case Studies!

Our team’s work on “Tailoring Digital Diabetes Care for Culture and Language” highlights an innovative, multilingual approach to diabetes care using four innovations:

-Engage patients at a critical point in case and facilitate timely adjustments to new treatments or lifestyles.
-Recruit participants from disadvantaged groups who are less represented in case studies
-Provide dietitian-led nutrition counseling in culture, ensuring a patient-centered dialogue
-Use wearable devices to deliver real-time glucose data and better support patients living with type 2 diabetes.

This recognition emphasizes our commitment to responsive care and meeting patients where they are. Congratulations to Eliza Chan, R.D., Dr. George Lee, Dr. Thu Quach, and Dr. Tran T. Doan for leading this important work and bringing this feature to life.

Samuel Merritt University recently awarded Asian Health Services’ CEO Julia Liou with the Health Impact Award as a Distinguished Friend of the University. The Oakland-based university educating the next generation of health care leaders recognized Liou’s leadership in pioneering patient and community initiatives and civic engagement that advanced responsive care for all.

During her acceptance speech, Liou shared, “Health care really isn’t just about services. It’s really about whether people are seen, valued, and heard. So, moments like that don’t just happen by accident. It happens because there are people who are committed to making sure that care is accessible and more human.”

Liou also recognized SMU saying, “Thank you SMU for your partnership and for believing that, together, we can really build the primary care workforce of the future and that we are going to be able to shape the future of health—together—and one that is rooted in community.”

We are proud to partner with SMU in preparing the next generation of health care leaders to serve our communities.

At a recent California State Assembly Human Services Committee hearing, Asian Health Services joined its statewide community partners to testify at a state assembly hearing held by Assemblymember Alex Lee and the API Legislative Caucus.

Together, we spoke to the critical need for continued funding for the Stop the Hate state initiative and why this program is critical for communities facing hate and discrimination. With its regional partners, AHS and its partners built a robust system of community healing interventions combined with systems change initiatives. Collectively, over 500,000 survivors of hate received lay counseling and mental health support, resource navigation, emergency financial aid, food deliveries, acupuncture, support groups, community ambassadors’ safety interventions, senior safety transportation accompaniment, leadership empowerment trainings, and more.

CEO Julia Liou provided official testimony and Ben Wang, Special Initiatives Director and Stop the Hate team members shared public comment about the critical role Regional Leads and grantees, noting that in some healing programs over 90% of clients received access to lay mental health counseling within 48 hours of case assignment—an important lifeline during a time of severe shortages of culturally and linguistically responsive mental health care.

We will continue to stand up for programs like Stop the Hate so communities can access the healing, support, and whole-person care they deserve.

We’re so proud of this team and the energy they brought every step of the way. It’s amazing to see Team AHSome back together—and to welcome so many new faces! 🏃‍♀️

Asian Health Services (AHS) President Thu Quach spoke before a joint hearing of the California State Senate and California State Assembly Health Committees on “The Cost of Uncertainty: Health Coverage Access & Affordability Amid Federal Instability.”

She joined providers and community leaders from across the state to raise concerns about the potential impacts of recent national policy changes that would impose Medicaid work requirements, cuts to health and nutrition programs, and budget cuts on health coverage for Californians. Over 6,000 AHS patients may lose coverage, impacting AHS’ ability to provide care.

Her key message to policymakers focused on how the health of our communities depends on stability, investment, and a continued commitment to coverage for all.
