Growing a baby in your body then having that baby come out of your body is so sci-fi!!!

I remember seeing my wet squishy chunky baby on my chest for the first time and just being mind blown that my body made another human from scratch 🤯

Shaking ass is a crucial part of my existence. Every single space I curate be it on person or online we carve out time to get deeply in our body.

If you’ve taken my virtual traditional birth worker training then you know our culminating session we always have lead us in a dynamic twerk class!!

If you have come to the immersion a you know we always danccceeeee at some point!! Be it in the club or the living room!!

Moving our body is indigenous and revolutionary in a system that is centered in commodifying our vessels. It’s how we reclaim our autonomy and exercise our agency!

So will I be seeing you this year? Virtually or in person?

I remember when I first learned of the doll test. It was undergrad at SF state during an Africana Studies class. I forget which one but i remember how profound this test was. How do we learn to hate? To have bias? To have prejudice?

A few years later while training to be a teacher for freedom school in Oakland we conducted this test on the children. The results were consistent with what Dr. Clarke and his wife found. Black children internalized negative self image and biases based upon social conditioning even at such young ages. We conducted the test at the beginning of the children entering the camp and then at the end. In just 6 short weeks their self image and self efficacy increase substantially!

When we talk about implicit bias in the medical field contributing to poor outcomes for Black birthing people and Mothers, it goes much deeper than what provider have learned during medical, nursing, or midwifery school.

This bias penetrates deeeply within the fabric of socialization. It’s the reason that even though Black people experience extreme discrimination we still choose and many even prefer to receive care from the system which harms them. It’s the reason that having a Black doctor isn’t enough.

Racism is the cause not race. It’s the systemic and personal bias that Black peoples are inferior that causes poor outcomes. Not our biological makeup.

What would you add to this conversation?
How do you think your child would do in the doll test?
What do you think your provider would choose when they were a child on the doll test?

If you want to look up the original test search for Dr. Kenneth Clarke and his Wife Mammie Clarke “Doll test” 1940. It’s worth your time….

Can I saturate yalls time lines with some Black Maternal Joy on this beautiful Saturday?

The midwifery model of care centers the mom and baby holistic experience as they journey through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Midwives provide a broad spectrum of care from menarche to menopause. This includes treating menstrual, reproductive and hormonal imbalances, ailments, and conditions to preconception support. Midwives provide comprehensive care through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum and can track both the mom and baby to assure they are healthy. Midwives can independently care for their clients and will refer to specialist when indicated like an obgyn, MFM, Chiropractor, Nutritionist, etc.

The midwifery model of care is rooted in a integrative collaborative model that thrives when able to coexist amongst other practitioners. The midwifery model of care centers the client’s needs and voice and see the client as the one driving the vehicle and an expert of their own experience. Midwives consider the emotional, mental, spriritual, and physical well being in all practices and procedures.

Pregnancy and birth are seen a physiological events in nature that rarely need assistance rather than a medical event that requires intervention almost always.

Midwives provide a golden standard of health care that has stellar outcomes all across the board. This is the antidote and the answer to the maternal health crisis.

Drop your questions below and I’ll be sure to get to them!

Would you have a home birth? Have you experienced the care of a midwife?

Get ready for the launch of both the 2nd annual Black Maternal Health Festival AND the 2nd cohort of the Black Midwives Fellowship!!!

Wow do yall remember this?

I’m not surprised but what the actual f**k?????? Can we dig into this a bit together?

The medical industrial complex has crafted its procedures and stances based on the exploitation and experimentation of Black and indigenous bodies. This case doesn’t exist in a vacuum but rather is aligned with exactly how they “research”. There are so many levels of ethical and human right violations here. They will assert that the fetus deserved to live and that they are pro life…but the truth of the matter is the life of Adriana was seen as disposable. She was ignored and her symptoms were diminished….this led to her death. She was only 9 weeks pregnant and they kept her on life support for months as an incubator. does this sound familiar (the two laboring women that went viral who were denied care). Do you see how this is alllllll connected? The anti Black racism and discrimination is systemic not individualized. So no one person or even group of people can overturn such heinous acts!!

There isn’t any gutting the system from the inside out. There no optimizing the system. There’s no infiltration that will ever stop cases like these from happening….

We must create NEW systems, NEW networks of support, NEW beliefs and have our priorities reevaluated as a collective.

What say youuuuuuuuu???
