Abby Rose Somatics Trauma Therapies & Somatic Education
for Stress, Chronic Pain and Symptoms of Trauma: www.abbyrosesomatics.com

My practice is devoted to relieving the physical and emotional effects of trauma and chronic stress. A Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Hanna Somatic Educator in the Bay Area for nearly 15 years, I have a gentle, educational approach to help you learn how to calm your body’s emergency response system, quiet your mind and build a sense of safety and resilience in your life. My goal is to guide you to the healing resources that live within your symptoms and have been a part of you all along. I focus on helping people with traumas ranging from accidents, falls, medical procedures, and physical or sexual assault to early developmental trauma (relational issues stemming from early abuse, neglect or stress patterns that began in childhood), chronic stress, protective bracing in the body and recovery from injuries. Because of my own history with chronic pain, I have a deep interest in working with long-term pain, movement limitations and chronic muscle tension. I also have an affinity for helping those with a spiritual or mindfulness practice to navigate difficult energetic or emotional experiences that can arise during meditation and spiritual inquiry. I enjoy collaborating with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare providers to form a supportive team for my clients. Difficult life experiences can make a lasting imprint, shaping our sense of identity and world view. Working on core struggles through the lens of the body takes us to the place where rational thought meets instinct, giving us access to our deepest strength and wisdom. And it connects us to primal survival mechanisms that are designed to keep us safe. Chronic stress and trauma cause these lifesaving systems to get stuck in over-drive, creating feelings of helplessness, anxiety, shame, depression, hypervigilance and chronic tension and pain. The body is both where our stress response lives and where our nervous system calms itself. Working on entrenched emotional and physical struggles through the vehicle of the body gives us the best chance to work through challenges at the deepest level and in the most profound way. Symptoms:
- anxiety, fear, panic attacks, hypervigilance
- depression, fatigue
- feeling stuck in shame, low self-esteem
- feeling easily triggered, exaggerated emotional responses
- feeling numb, vague, spacy
- ruminating, intrusive thoughts or memories
- chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and other chronic physical ailments
- repetitive stress injuries ( from computer use, playing musical instruments, etc)
- headaches, migraines
- protective bracing and tension
- insomnia
- asthma, breathing difficulties
- digestive issues, irritable bowel syndrome
- sensitivity to light and sound
- physical symptoms with no apparent cause

Dr. Heller illustrates the how early adaptations to misattunement, neglect and abuse create physiological dysregulation and profound distortions of identity. He describes the distinction between shock and developmental trauma, and the importance of working both cognitively and somatically when working with developmental trauma.

IN JUST ONE WEEK:
Preview Dr. Laurence Heller's Only U.S. Training

Special Webinar: NARM SESSION DECONSTRUCTION
Neal Winblad, Saturday, July 14, 10 am -12 noon (PST) $35

(registrants receive webinar recording; attendance not required)

Key to the NARM approach is resolving how we lose our agency by continuing to operate from identities and survival styles learned as very young children to protect the attachment relationship with our caregivers. In this 2-hour webinar we will explore the theoretical basis of the NARM approach and NARM's five early survival styles.

We will then watch a NARM session given by Dr. Laurence Heller. Neal will break down and deconstruct what Dr. Heller is doing moment by moment, explaining the thought process behind his therapeutic choices. Seeing NARM in action in this way helps illustrate the power and effectiveness of this important model for healing developmental trauma.

Neal Winblad, LMFT, SEP, NMP, has an active private practice in Pleasanton, CA. He is trained in psychodynamic, transpersonal, and somatic psychotherapies. Neal is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Lead Teaching Assistant both nationally and internationally. He is a Master NARM Practitioner, a Lead Training Assistant in Bay Area NARM trainings, and faculty-in-training with the NARM Training Institute.

Webinar: DR. LAURENCE HELLER with Brad Kammer
THE HIDDEN DIMENSIONS OF SHAME & GUILT
Friday, June 8, 10 am -12:30 pm (PST) $100
(All registrants receive webinar recording and handouts; live attendance not required)

The NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) brings a new perspective to working with shame and guilt. Instead of looking at shame and guilt as emotions that become fixed within us, NARM understands them as a process, and not a state. Specifically, recognizing the process of shame as a mechanism that serves to protect the attachment relationship, and how this ultimately leads to an identity based in toxic shame.

This webinar will explore the hidden dimensions of shame and guilt, including how people narrow their lives in order to avoid the possibility of feeling shame and guilt, and the costs of this self-limiting behavior. It will also cover how to work clinically with complex shame dynamics, even in its very subtle forms, as well as the disidentification process that can help us broaden and expand our lives.

Webinar topics include:

• The difference between toxic shame/guilt and healthy shame/guilt
• The nature of shame-based identifications
• Shame and guilt as the guardians of the gate of the survival styles
• Shame and its relationship to the core dilemma
• Shame as a mechanism that protects the attachment relationship
• Shame and splitting
• Looking at shame as a process not a state; as a verb not a noun
• Guilt, shame and their relationship to distorted aggression
• Shame as an internal collapse state
• Guilt as a defense against helplessness
• How to recognize shame in ourselves and clients in its subtler forms
• How to address shame and guilt dynamics in the NARM approach
• How to help clients experience agency in the shame and guilt dynamics they experience
