Understanding PCOM is essential for diagnosing Polycystic O***y Syndrome 🔍
POCUSPedia: OBGYN
Polycystic Ovarian Morphology
PCOM is an ultrasound finding of enlarged ovaries with many small follicles (cysts) and increased stromal tissue. It is defined by specific criteria, such as 12 or more follicles (2–9 mm) per o***y and/or increased ovarian volume (greater than 10 cm³)
An ultrasound finding characterised by the presence of 12 or more small follicles (underdeveloped sacs that can contain an egg) in at least one o***y. These follicles are often arranged in a "string of pearls" pattern around the edge of the o***y.
PCOM Ultrasound is crucial for diagnosing Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) by visualising characteristic features like numerous small follicles ("string of pearls") and increased ovarian volume, confirming clinical signs, guiding treatment for infertility or metabolic issues, and differentiating PCOS phenotypes, providing non-invasive, objective data for this common, complex disorder.
