This is amazing talking about the difference with Folic Acid and Folate. Our food in the US was decided upon in the 90’s to fortify our grains and other foods with Folic Acid. This was Not done in Europe as they feared the consequences long term. Many and it is thought to be upwards of 60% of the population has this gene mutation MTHFR. If you have MTHFR Folic Acid is not broke down properly at all for methylation.

PS European medicine focuses on genetics 😏

Can Mega Doses of Folate Cause Cancer?

Separating Fear, Facts, and Folate

Folate (vitamin B9) is one of the most misunderstood nutrients in modern nutrition. It plays a vital role in DNA repair, brain health, pregnancy, and methylation. Yet from time to time, headlines claim that “high doses of folate may cause cancer.”

So what’s the truth?

The short answer is this:
Folate does not cause cancer — but very high doses, in the wrong form, can accelerate the growth of existing cancer cells in certain situations.

Let’s unpack this properly.

What Folate Actually Does in the Body

Folate is essential for:
• DNA synthesis and repair
• Cell division
• Methylation, which regulates gene expression and detoxification

Every cell in the body relies on folate to divide and function correctly. This includes healthy tissues such as the gut lining, blood cells, skin, and brain.

This is why folate deficiency is clearly associated with increased cancer risk, as well as birth defects, neurological issues, and elevated homocysteine levels.

Where the Cancer Concern Comes From

1. Folate deficiency increases cancer risk

Low folate levels can lead to:
• DNA strand breaks
• Increased mutation rates
• Impaired DNA repair mechanisms

Large observational studies consistently show that inadequate folate intake is associated with higher rates of colorectal and other cancers.

2. Mega-dose folic acid is the real issue

Some studies observed that very high doses of folic acid (typically 5–15 mg per day, taken long-term):
• Did not cause cancer
• But may accelerate the growth of existing pre-cancerous or cancerous cells

Importantly, this effect was mainly seen with:
• Synthetic folic acid, not natural folate
• Prolonged high-dose supplementation
• Individuals who already had undiagnosed polyps or tumours

In simple terms:

Folate does not initiate cancer, but excessive folic acid may “feed” rapidly dividing cells if cancer already exists.

Folic Acid vs Methylfolate: A Critical Distinction

Not all folate is the same.

Synthetic folic acid:
• Must be converted into active folate by the body
• Can accumulate as unmetabolised folic acid (UMFA)
• Conversion is less efficient in people with MTHFR variants

Methylfolate (5-MTHF):
• Already bioactive
• Used directly by cells
• Does not accumulate in the bloodstream
• Supports normal methylation and homocysteine regulation

There is no convincing evidence that physiological doses of methylfolate increase cancer risk.

What About Pregnancy?

Folate is essential in pregnancy.

Adequate folate intake:
• Prevents neural tube defects
• Supports fetal brain and spinal development
• Reduces miscarriage and pregnancy complications

For many women — particularly those with MTHFR variants — methylfolate is often the preferred form.

The proven benefits of appropriate folate intake in pregnancy far outweigh hypothetical risks linked to extreme dosing scenarios.

Safe vs Risky Folate Intake (Practical Guidance)

Generally safe and beneficial
• 400–800 micrograms per day
• Folate from whole foods
• Methylfolate supplementation
• Targeted use for:
• MTHFR variants
• Elevated homocysteine
• Preconception and pregnancy

Use caution with
• Chronic mega-doses (5 mg or more daily)
• Synthetic folic acid
• Stacking supplements alongside heavily fortified foods

Especially in people with:
• Previous colorectal polyps
• Prostate cancer history
• Unknown cancer status

The Bottom Line
• Folate deficiency increases cancer risk
• Normalising folate status is protective
• Methylfolate at physiological doses is considered safe
• Mega-dose folic acid may accelerate existing cancer — but does not cause it

This issue is not about fear.
It is about dose, form, and context.

At NeuroThrive, the focus is simple:
support normal biology, not overwhelm it.

Great explanation of how inflammation and the lymphatic system impact brain function.

Great explanation of how inflammation and the lymphatic system impact brain function.

🌊 What Is the Glymphatic System?

The glymphatic system is the brain’s unique waste clearance network, functioning similarly to the lymphatic system in the body—but with a twist. It was only discovered in 2012 by Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, and it has since changed how we understand neurodegeneration and brain inflammation.
This system relies on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to flush out waste products from brain tissue through perivascular pathways, facilitated by a type of glial cell called astrocytes. These cells regulate the flow of interstitial fluid and act as a conduit for metabolic clearance during deep sleep, especially in slow-wave sleep cycles.

🔥 When the Glymphatic System Is Inhibited: The Inflammatory Storm

When the glymphatic system is impaired, neurotoxic proteins—like beta-amyloid, tau proteins, and inflammatory cytokines—begin to accumulate in the brain's interstitial spaces. This accumulation triggers:
* Microglial activation, leading to chronic low-grade neuroinflammation
* Increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β
* Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction within neurons
* Blood-brain barrier permeability ("leaky brain") and further immune dysregulation

Over time, this chronic inflammatory state can manifest as:
* Brain fog, memory issues, and cognitive decline
* Mood disorders such as anxiety and depression
* Increased risk of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
* Worsened systemic inflammation due to vagus nerve signaling disruption

🛌 Sleep, the Glymphatic Switch, and Circadian Health

The glymphatic system is most active during deep sleep, particularly during non-REM slow-wave phases. When sleep is disrupted—whether due to stress, screen exposure, sleep apnea, or erratic sleep cycles—the brain cannot engage in glymphatic flushing.
Sleep deprivation has been shown to:
* Increase extracellular beta-amyloid by up to 43% in a single night
* Decrease the expression of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels in astrocytes, impairing fluid transport
* Heighten markers of neuroinflammation, including NF-κB signaling and glial activation

🧬 Systemic Inflammation and Glymphatic Dysfunction: A Two-Way Street

Interestingly, inflammation itself suppresses glymphatic flow. Research shows that systemic infections, autoimmune flares, and even gut dysbiosis can produce pro-inflammatory cytokines that reduce CSF dynamics and glymphatic activity.
Conversely, poor glymphatic clearance can worsen systemic inflammation by:
* Disrupting hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis signaling
* Altering vagal tone and the gut-brain-liver immune axis
* Impairing clearance of immune-modulating neurotransmitters like glutamate

🌿 How to Support Glymphatic Health

1. Prioritize Deep Sleep
* Aim for 7–9 hours of uninterrupted sleep in total darkness
* Use magnesium, L-theanine, or glycine to support non-REM sleep
* Avoid screens and caffeine 3+ hours before bedtime
2. Rebound, Stretch, and Move Your Spine
* Movement of the spine and neck enhances CSF circulation
* Manual lymphatic drainage may also indirectly stimulate glymphatic function
3. Hydration & Electrolyte Balance
* CSF production is heavily dependent on fluid status
* Add trace minerals or electrolytes to water to support fluid dynamics
4. Nutraceutical Support
* Resveratrol, turmeric (curcumin), omega-3s, and NAC reduce neuroinflammation
* Melatonin not only promotes deep sleep but enhances glymphatic activity
5. Cranial and Cervical Lymphatic Drainage
* Facial and neck MLD can relieve interstitial congestion
* Techniques like craniosacral therapy or vagal nerve stimulation may further support this network

🧠 Final Thought

The glymphatic system is a vital yet vulnerable detox engine for the brain. When impaired, it doesn’t just affect cognition—it can unleash a cascade of inflammatory dysfunction that spreads throughout the entire body.

By supporting this system through sleep hygiene, lymphatic stimulation, and anti-inflammatory practices, we lay the foundation for resilient mental, neurological, and immune health.

The importance of Glutathione! Our clinic offers a highly absorbable form you can take daily as well as IV therapy. Come see us!!

🚨 What would happen without glutathione?

1️⃣ Severe oxidative damage

Glutathione is your body’s master antioxidant.
Without it:
• Free radicals would damage DNA, proteins, and cell membranes
• Cells would age and die much faster
• Inflammation would spiral out of control

➡️ This is incompatible with long-term survival.

2️⃣ Detoxification failure (especially the liver)

Glutathione is essential for Phase II liver detoxification.
Without it:
• Toxins, heavy metals, drugs, alcohol, and pollutants accumulate
• The liver becomes overwhelmed
• Risk of poisoning, liver injury, and systemic illness rises sharply

3️⃣ Immune system collapse

Immune cells rely on glutathione to function.
Low or absent glutathione leads to:
• Weak immune response
• Frequent or severe infections
• Poor viral and bacterial clearance

This is why critically ill patients often have very low glutathione levels.

4️⃣ Mitochondrial failure (energy crash)

Glutathione protects mitochondria.
Without it:
• ATP (energy) production drops
• Profound fatigue develops
• Muscle weakness and neurological symptoms appear

➡️ Think chronic exhaustion at a cellular level.

5️⃣ Brain & nervous system damage

The brain is extremely sensitive to oxidative stress.
Without glutathione:
• Neurons are damaged
• Risk of seizures, cognitive decline, mood disorders increases
• Strong links to neurodegenerative conditions

This is especially relevant in MTHFR / homocysteine disorders.

6️⃣ Life is not sustainable

In reality:
• Complete absence of glutathione is not compatible with life
• Genetic disorders that severely impair glutathione synthesis are life-threatening from infancy
• Even partial depletion dramatically increases disease risk

🔗 Why this matters for methylation & homocysteine

Homocysteine can be diverted down the transsulfuration pathway to produce:

cysteine → glutathione

If this pathway is impaired (e.g. B6 deficiency, CBS issues, high homocysteine):
• Glutathione drops
• Oxidative stress rises
• Neurological and inflammatory symptoms worsen

🧠 Simple takeaway

Glutathione is not optional.
Without it, detox fails, immunity weakens, cells break down, and life cannot be sustained.
