Athletes of all ages and experience levels should be incorporating mental skills training PROACTIVELY, instead of waiting for an issue to arise!

Think of it being similar to prehabilitation exercises to prevent injury! Athletes spend time developing and training their body for performance, which is what should also be done with their mind!

Adding these mental skills as part of their program helps ENHANCE SELF-AWARENESS AND SELF-REGULATION, which helps athletes implement coping strategies proactively!

Most people only see the tip of the iceberg for an injured athlete- how the athlete acts, what the athlete says, the physical limitations, and the work they’re putting in for their comeback. Many times an athlete is adhering to their rehab, showing up for classes, and saying they’re fine, but they could be struggling below the surface.

-Fear of re-injury
-Pressure to come back fast
-Loss of identity
-Mental exhaustion
-Isolation

Injury doesn’t only impact an athlete physically; it also impacts their psychological well-being.

An injured athlete needs to validate their feelings and experiences. It is just as important for the athlete’s support system to recognize these components.

Hey athlete! One of the biggest strengths you have is staying connected to your WHY! Your WHY is the reason you do what you do; the reason you make sacrifices to play your sport; the reason you set goals for yourself; and the reason you’re passionate about the sport you play.

Your WHY is not for anyone else but you! It acts like a guiding star, helping you navigate, especially when times get tough!

What’s your WHY??

Reflect: What went well this week? What can you improve upon for next week?

Recover: Include active recovery, meditation, deep breathing, or stretching

Let’s talk about the invisible load of injuries:

Fear
Doubt
Frustration
Isolation
Identity

On the surface, an athlete might appear strong, but below the surface is where most of the weight lies.

Injuries don’t only impact an athlete physically- they also impact their mental health and well-being, which can be challenging to navigate.

It’s important always to remember that recovery is more than physical.

Being motivated by committing to your goals develops character, enhances self-efficacy, and provides feelings of competence!

The truth is it’s all up to YOU to engage and stay engaged- and that can be challenging!!

This connects to understanding WHY you do what you do to stay motivated. The great thing is that your WHY is a unique part of who you are as an exerciser or athlete.

Connecting to your WHY helps create the drive and energy you need to achieve your goals.
