It's all over our news feed - the flu running rampant. Let's remember:
● this is the season we need to be prepared for
● you don't build a strong immune system overnight
● the best intervention is prevention
● if you get diagnosed, ask your nurse how she feels about Tamiflu 😉
Here's how you can prepare your body to fight off any illness (not just the flu)
1. Take a good reliable Multivitamin
• studies show that majority of patients presenting to the hospital with severe respiratory illness are extremely defected in key vitamins and nutrients. Some of the top deficiencies include vitamin D, Vitamin C, and Zinc.
2. Stress Management is non negotiable
• when your body is in a chronic state of stress, your organs are not functioning to their highest potential - it's literally the goal of "fight or flight" and it's beautiful when you're regulated. If you're nervous system is disregulated? Your body is more focused on running from the non existent bear chasing you than protecting you from an illness
3. Wash your hands - C'mon y'all. You know better.
4. Stay hydrated and well rested
5. Did I say vitamin D already? GET YO VITAMIN D.
6. Well balanced diet - you cannot out supplement poor lifestyle choices. Your key nutrients come from the food you eat. Make good choices.
7. Keep your internal temperature regulated! We're all cold right now. Imagine the work your body is doing to keep up with the cold beverages and foods you keep consuming. Now is not the time for ice cream, smoothies and ice cold water on the regular. You need warming foods to stay regulated. Hot teas, warm soups, etc
8. Stay home when you're sick - AND STOP SENDING YOUR SICK KIDS TO SCHOOL. Not only are we continuing to spread illness - we're encouraging a life of not respecting our bodies needs. Let those babies rest and recover.
9. Daily nasal rinses - did you know this? This and nasal saline sprays can significantly reduce the risk of infections
Remember, prevention is key. Once you're diagnosed with a virus such as influenza, respect your body. Rest, hydrate, warming foods.
