“Drag is a powerful tool that affords us the privilege to advocate for our community. As Dragtivists, we can combat HIV stigma while raising awareness and funds to support HIV prevention, treatment, education, and support services. Make health a priority, know our status and cultivate safety. Together, we can break down barriers and create future free of stigma and discrimination. Join me in our mission to make a profound impact- one wig, and one gig at a time.“

Led by the AIDS InstituteExit Disclaimer, National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAD) is observed each year on September 18 to focus on the increasing number of people who, because of major advancements in HIV treatment, are living long, full lives with HIV. The awareness day also calls attention to the unique health and social needs, as well as the challenges of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care among people who are aging. This year’s theme, “Protect Our Aging Populations: Meeting New Challenges to Live Longer and Improve Lives!”, aims to emphasize the need for prevention, research, and data focused on the aging community and increase medical understanding of the impact of HIV on the natural aging process.

More than half of people living with diagnosed HIV in the United States and dependent areas are aged 50 and older. Some were diagnosed later in life, while others have lived with HIV for many years. Support services are available through health care providers, local community centers, or HIV service organizations.

“Testing positive for HIV doesn’t mean you are no longer a person, and you shouldn’t accept anything less. Some of the best people I know are undetectable and they show that love is love, and it is unconditional.”

“We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty, and we use humor and irrelevant wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit. The Sisters of the Sacred Heartland begin our work as a Mission House in Oklahoma City in early 2011. We achieved our goal and celebrated our evaluation in September of 2012, becoming a fully professed house of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and the first chapter in Oklahoma. Since our inception we have worked with and raised money for over 25 different nonprofit organizations and community events, and we have donated over $35,000 directly back into our OKC community .

Please visit our mother organization at www.thesisters.org to find out more about the founding of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in San Francisco in 1979, and about the work that is carried all around the world by fully professed houses and missions just like ours”
