Happy World Doula Week!!
Today is really the last day of World Doula Week, but I needed to highlight it. As a Doula, who is very new to this process, I can't help but beam with thankfulness that I not only get to be a part of this community, but that I also get to serve and honor each momma, and her partner, in their journey of welcoming their sweet little one into the world. A very sweet friend and mentor of mine, Zeal Birth Services, worded it perfectly. Here's what she said...
"Doulas are the water girl, the fix her hair and put a cool rag on the back of her neck gal, encourage mothers when we start to see overwhelm take over her face and eyebrows, loving reminders to let go, surrender, trust, and to remind her of her “why” and the strength that is already within. Doulas are the “do not touch her or perform anything without proper consent” and watchful of any wolves in sheep’s clothing. We make plates of food after birth, grab mother’s favorite meal, or pull her hair back when she vomits. We are the hip squeezers, back scratchers, and holders of mothers as they catch their own baby…. Our job is not glamorous….but it is raw and holy. We serve out of the depths of our heart, because we have been there, too. And when you send thank you cards, letters, sweet posts or texts saying “I couldn’t have done it without you”, we will respond “yes, you could have, but I was so very honored to serve you and witness your strength”. "
This is not just a job/vocation for us. This is a calling and a passion to help empower each momma that we have the honor to work with. To empower her, coach her and be there for her. We are called the mother the mothers, and it's such an honor to do so!
