ABA Term of the Week: Functional Communication Training (FCT)

Many challenging behaviors happen for one simple reason: your child is trying to communicate a need but doesn’t yet have an easier way to express it.

Functional Communication Training (FCT) is an ABA strategy that teaches children what to say or do instead of using behaviors like crying, hitting, or throwing items.

Instead of focusing on stopping the behavior first, FCT focuses on teaching a replacement communication skill that works better and faster for the child.

Example at Home:

If a child throws toys when they want help: Teach the child to say or signal “Help please.”

Prompt them to use that communication when they begin to struggle, before challenging behaviors occur. Immediately provide help when they ask appropriately.

Over time, your child learns that asking for help works better than throwing toys.

More Everyday Examples:

• Instead of whining for a snack → teach “Snack please.”
• Instead of screaming when a toy is taken → teach “My turn.”
• Instead of hitting to escape a task → teach “Break please.”

Why this works:

When communication is easier and more effective, challenging behaviors naturally decrease.

Small communication skills can create big changes in daily routines for families.

✨ Tip for parents: When your child uses the new communication skill—even with help—respond right away. Quick reinforcement helps the skill stick!

Unpopular opinion: Your child should not be in ABA therapy for years and still exhibiting the same challenging behaviors or inconsistent progress.

So, why do we see it so often?

This could be due to a number of factors, but most often it is due to a lack of generalization in the home environment, stemming from inconsistent caregiver guidance.

Caregiver guidance— aka parent training— is just as important as direct therapy. It teaches caregivers the skills they need to help their learner be successful in the home and community settings. When caregiver guidance is not a priority in the treatment process, progress may become stagnant and regression may occur.

At Boundless Behavior Consulting, participation in caregiver guidance is a requirement for treatment. Your BCBA will meet with you weekly or biweekly to help teach you the tools you and your child need for lasting success.

📝ABA Term of the Week: Reinforcement

In Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), reinforcement means increasing a behavior by following it with something meaningful to your child.

For example:
Your child asks for a toy using words → You give them the toy.

Your child cleans up their toys → You give praise or a high five.

Your child finishes homework → They earn extra playtime.

Because the outcome is helpful, the behavior is more likely to happen again in the future.

💡 Reinforcement isn’t bribing. It is provided contingent on a behavior. It’s a research-based strategy used in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to teach new skills, build independence, and encourage positive behaviors.

Have questions about how reinforcement works at home? Send us an email, call, or text — we’d love to learn how we can help! 🩷
