The FMMA is a non-partisan association that provides resources, support, and education to our members, and to the public, about the free market movement and why it is so important. We help to defend and expand the practice of free market medicine against the interference and intrusion of the government or other third parties. PILLARS OF THE FREE MARKET
Due to the wildly varying definitions of transparency and free market in this industry, many of which are neither free market or transparent, the FMMA has designated these pillars as the foundation of the Association. Our members are asked to always abide by these pillars; using ethics and transparency in all areas of their businesses. The Free Market works when there is freedom of choice. Price - PRICE is NOT a product, the CARE is the product. Selling access to pricing is anti-free market

Value - VALUE is established when the buyer and seller agree on a mutually beneficial price for care. Equality - Price EQUALITY is the basis of a free market. As we head into a new year, FMMA co-founders Dr. Keith Smith and Jay Kempton are proud to formally introduce our new Executive Director, Matt Ohrt.

Matt’s work as a reformer on the employer side has already shown what happens when transparency and competition stop being talking points and start becoming operating principles. Through his leadership, his book, and his advocacy, he’s demonstrated a model that delivers lower costs, higher quality, and real accountability for patients and businesses.

Matt doesn’t just believe in our mission. He’s lived it.

His drive is real. His results speak for themselves. And his leadership will keep this movement pushing forward in 2026 and beyond.

Faces of Free Market Medicine: FMMA Ohio

Lou Flaspohler and Ryan Jankord of FMMA Ohio meet weekly to tackle two driving questions:

1️⃣ How can we meaningfully expand access to high-quality healthcare in our region?
2️⃣ Who should truly own medical and insurance costs, and how do we move toward that future ideal?

Together, they’re building a blueprint for a more consumer-empowered healthcare economy by combining national-level plan architectures with local networks of physicians, advocates, and facilities to make quality care more accessible across Ohio.

Lou is a Rheumatologist operating a cash-only practice and is a passionate voice for patient autonomy. Ryan is a biomedical scientist turned CEO who focuses on health plan redesign and innovative business models that restore alignment between patients, physicians, and payers.

Both Lou and Ryan are serial entrepreneurs with a shared vision: a healthcare system grounded in empowered individuals, transparent pricing, and a value-driven model that consistently benefits both patients and providers.

Their mission is clear: build the healthiest, most transparent, patient-centered healthcare system possible. This dedication reflects what makes the FMMA so unique, a community of individuals and organizations moving together toward the same North Star.

Last month, FMMA Co-Founder Dr. Keith Smith testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Aging, speaking to lawmakers about how transparent, market-driven care delivers better outcomes and lower costs for patients.

In his remarks, Dr. Smith clearly and passionately articulated FMMA's purpose: to return medicine to patients and physicians through honest pricing and direct exchange.

“To the industry big shots, or as I call them, the cartel, the healthcare system in this country isn’t broken—it is working precisely as designed, meant to enrich the corporate elite and intermediaries at the expense of patients and the American people at large.”

His testimony underscored what FMMA members across the country already know: when buyers and sellers in healthcare can meet directly, prices fall, quality rises, and patients win.

FMMA continues to advocate for transparency, competition, and value: principles that put people, not bureaucracy, at the center of care.

A Milestone Moment for Price Transparency in Oklahoma!

Earlier this week, Governor Kevin Stitt celebrated the implementation of Oklahoma’s new Hospital Price Transparency law. This law will enforce hospital price transparency rules, making it easier for Oklahomans to compare costs and utilize free market principles to make informed choices about care.

Two of our founders, Dr. Keith Smith and Jay Kempton, were honored to stand alongside the Governor at this historic announcement. A new online tool has launched that allows people to search for any service or procedure at any hospital statewide. https://bit.ly/43q5lYb
