Free Market Medical Association

Free Market Medical Association Our Goal is to bring together buyers and sellers of healthcare good and services - while reducing costs and increasing quality. Cash is cash.

ABOUT THE FMMA
The FMMA is a non-partisan association that provides resources, support, and education to our members, and to the public, about the free market movement and why it is so important. We help to defend and expand the practice of free market medicine against the interference and intrusion of the government or other third parties. PILLARS OF THE FREE MARKET
Due to the wildly varying definitions of transparency and free market in this industry, many of which are neither free market or transparent, the FMMA has designated these pillars as the foundation of the Association. Our members are asked to always abide by these pillars; using ethics and transparency in all areas of their businesses. The Free Market works when there is freedom of choice. Price - PRICE is NOT a product, the CARE is the product. Selling access to pricing is anti-free market

Value - VALUE is established when the buyer and seller agree on a mutually beneficial price for care. Equality - Price EQUALITY is the basis of a free market. Any willing buyer should be offered the same price regardless of any factor. Go to fmma.org to learn more about the benefits of becoming a member!

“Healthcare doesn’t have to be different.”

When Free Market Medical Association Executive Director Matt Ohrt talks with CEOs, the reaction is almost always the same: "This is exactly what we’ve been looking for."

The idea is simple. Buy healthcare the way you buy everything else. Shop for value. Know the price. Expect quality.

When we stop treating healthcare like an exception and start applying the same common-sense rules that govern every other market, the confusion fades, and progress follows.

That’s how real change happens, one intuitive truth shared at a time.

The healthcare status quo isn’t confusing by accident.
It’s designed that way.

Patients are asked to make life-altering decisions without knowing prices. Employers are told rising costs are inevitable. “Discounts” are built on inflated numbers. Choice is limited to networks that benefit everyone except the patient.

This is not a market failure.
It’s the absence of a real market.

The Free Market Medical Association exists to restore what healthcare lost:
clear prices, direct relationships, accountability, and freedom of choice.

When patients can see prices, compare value, and choose their care, costs fall and quality rises. That’s not theory. It’s already happening.

Out-of-control healthcare costs aren’t a mystery. They’re the result of a system that hides prices and blocks competition.

In this incredible investigative series from Stand Together, a Stanford economist breaks down what actually drives costs in American healthcare. The conclusion lines up with what FMMA leaders have been saying for years: transparency, competition, and real market forces matter.

Of course, they also spoke with FMMA Co-Founder Dr. Keith Smith for the longer documentary.

Watch the piece. And let’s keep pushing the conversation where it belongs.

Faces of Free Market Medicine: FMMA Arizona

Meet Tim Spooner and Dr. Kendrick Johnson, two leaders championing transparency and patient-centered care across Arizona.

Founded in 2019, FMMA Arizona unites providers, employers, and advocates who believe patients deserve clarity, fairness, and direct access to high-value care.

Tim’s work with Spooner and Solve Global demonstrates how transparency enhances community health, while Dr. Johnson’s direct primary care practice illustrates how removing barriers makes care more personal and affordable.

Arizona is already seeing results. DPC partnerships, movement-based PT, and bundled surgical pricing that lower costs and improve outcomes. In 2026, the chapter aims to grow leadership and expand free market solutions statewide.

Congratulate these leaders in the comments on their exceptional work!

For too many businesses and families, healthcare remains the biggest unknown. Costs rise without explanation. Projections feel more like guesses. This is why free market healthcare matters.

January is when plans get made. Budgets get set. And assumptions get challenged.

As one FMMA partner shared:

“In our first year with free market healthcare, our Stop Loss Carrier projects our plan costs will decline another 21%.”

That kind of result doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when prices are clear, incentives are aligned, and care is delivered through direct relationships instead of layers of intermediaries.

If you’re mapping out the year ahead, healthcare doesn’t have to be the wildcard in your plan.

As we head into a new year, FMMA co-founders Dr. Keith Smith and Jay Kempton are proud to formally introduce our new Executive Director, Matt Ohrt.

Matt’s work as a reformer on the employer side has already shown what happens when transparency and competition stop being talking points and start becoming operating principles. Through his leadership, his book, and his advocacy, he’s demonstrated a model that delivers lower costs, higher quality, and real accountability for patients and businesses.

Matt doesn’t just believe in our mission. He’s lived it.

His drive is real. His results speak for themselves. And his leadership will keep this movement pushing forward in 2026 and beyond.

🎥 Watch the conversation and meet the newest force within the FMMA.

We’ll be sharing more moments from this virtual leadership roundtable over the next few weeks.

Faces of Free Market Medicine: FMMA Ohio

Lou Flaspohler and Ryan Jankord of FMMA Ohio meet weekly to tackle two driving questions:

1️⃣ How can we meaningfully expand access to high-quality healthcare in our region?
2️⃣ Who should truly own medical and insurance costs, and how do we move toward that future ideal?

Together, they’re building a blueprint for a more consumer-empowered healthcare economy by combining national-level plan architectures with local networks of physicians, advocates, and facilities to make quality care more accessible across Ohio.

Lou is a Rheumatologist operating a cash-only practice and is a passionate voice for patient autonomy. Ryan is a biomedical scientist turned CEO who focuses on health plan redesign and innovative business models that restore alignment between patients, physicians, and payers.

Both Lou and Ryan are serial entrepreneurs with a shared vision: a healthcare system grounded in empowered individuals, transparent pricing, and a value-driven model that consistently benefits both patients and providers.

Their mission is clear: build the healthiest, most transparent, patient-centered healthcare system possible. This dedication reflects what makes the FMMA so unique, a community of individuals and organizations moving together toward the same North Star.
