Across Kansas, more than 5,500 children and teens are currently in foster care—and over half are age 10 and older. That means teens make up the largest group of youth in care today.

Understanding who is in foster care helps paint a clearer picture of where support is needed most. Teens are a critical part of that story, and their needs continue to shape how communities show up.

What comes to mind when you think about supporting teens in foster care?

Wednesday’s wellness tip? Start with kindness. Meet: Gabby

Today we’re celebrating Gabby, a Family Service Coordinator, whose compassion and dedication make a difference every day. 💙

Gabby is always ready to support coworkers and help new team members feel confident and organized. She’s also a strong advocate for the foster homes she works with and the youth in their care, leading with empathy and professionalism.

A teammate shared:
“Gabby is a bright and shining star within our department and agency, and her kindness makes a meaningful difference every day.”

👏Help us celebrate Gabby by leaving a message of encouragement in the comments!

Weekend plans: coffee, sunshine… and showing up for our community. 💛 Real conversations, real support and real care for our communities. That's what we are about.

This past weekend, our Prevention Services team showed up in Topeka for the Save A Life event. Erica represented 2Gen, while Tywansley and Nikki shared the impact of Rise Up, all centered around prevention and substance use awareness.

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of James (pictured on the right), one of our dedicated Parent Mentors.

James was a father, a veteran and a powerful example of what’s truly possible. After navigating the child welfare system as a parent, he worked so hard to safely reunify with his children and went on to help other parents do exactly the same. He showed up with empathy, so much encouragement and a deep belief that families can heal and rebuild. He was known for reminding parents they were never alone, even in some of their hardest moments.

James made a lasting impact on the families he supported and the KVC community and we are so grateful for his life, his story and the hope he shared with so many of us.

"James was a founding member of KVC's Engaging Parents & Developing Leaders Workgroup. For more than 10 years he worked to improve the Kansas Child Welfare System through lifting up the voice and experience of parents and by using his lived experience to create meaningful changes for others. James always reminded others how important love and hope are to healing. He will be deeply missed." — Linda Bass, KVC Kansas President

We’re keeping his loved ones in our thoughts during this time. We are thankful for James and the legacy he leaves behind. 💙

When people picture foster care, they often think of younger kids. But many youth in care are actually teens. Figuring out who they are, building independence and still needing guidance and support along the way.

Understanding that reality helps paint a more complete picture of foster care today and highlights the importance of showing up for youth at every stage of life.

Have you ever considered what it could look like to support a teen?

💛 A huge thank you to our friends at KindCraft!

Every spring, KindCraft shows up for the kids and families we serve in the biggest way — assembling ~250 "bunny bags" filled with candy, eggs, activities, sidewalk chalk and of course, so much more! 🐣

And they do it all themselves, raising their own funding and rallying nearly 100 volunteers to make it happen.

This kind of generosity doesn't go unnoticed. To the KindCraft team and every volunteer who packed a bag this year: thank you for seeing our kids and choosing to show up for them. 💚

💚 We are so grateful!

A heartfelt thank you to the Olathe Mayor's Children's Fund for awarding $14k+ to support foster children in our community.

This generous grant will go directly toward the things every child deserves — a bed to sleep in, a car seat to ride safely, clothing on their back and hygiene items to start each day with dignity.

To the OMCF board and everyone who makes this fund possible: your investment in these kids is changing lives. We are honored to be your partner in this work. 💛

One of the beautiful realities of foster care is that it’s never just about one child or teen. It’s about the entire family opening their hearts and home. And when someone new joins your household, everyone can feel the impact.

We love seeing our teams grow and lead with purpose 💙

Renny, our Executive Vice President of Employee Engagement, recently facilitated a Strengths workshop with our KVC Kansas leaders and the Intensive In-Home Services team. Opportunities like this help our staff build on what they do best—so they can continue making a meaningful impact for children, teens and families.

Strong teams create stronger connections & that’s at the heart of everything we do!

When we talk about health, we usually think about our physical health. But health is so much more than that, especially for youth in foster care.

When a child or teen has to leave their home and adjust to a new environment, it can have a lasting impact on their mental and emotional wellbeing. It can lead to increased stress and anxiety, disruptions in school, difficulty forming relationships and a constant need to adapt to new environments and people.

Mental health is health. And so is stability. So is feeling safe, supported and connected.

This World Health Day, it’s important to remember that not every child you meet is starting from the same place. Some are carrying more than we can see.

A little patience and compassion can go a long way. You never know what a child or teen may be navigating behind the scenes.
