Happy Juneteenth! Curious about the history of this holiday? It is celebrated annually on June 19th, marking the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. This occurred two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had already declared them free.
