Happy AOTA Weekend to the profession that said:
“Let’s help people live real life again.”
A quick, very unofficial history of Occupational Therapy:
1910s:
• Arts, crafts, and meaningful activity heal the mind and body
Mid-1900s:
• Rehab hospitals, physical recovery, function becomes the focus
Late 1900s:
• ADLs, independence, ergonomics, mental health, pediatrics, geriatrics
Today:
• Home safety
• Aging in place
• Bariatric and plus-size care
• Functional capacity testing
• Legal support services
• Adaptive equipment
• Real-world problem solving
• Whole-person care
We went from basket weaving to barrier busting.
From crafts to complex care.
From “What is OT?” to “Wow, I didn’t know OTs did ALL that.”
And honestly....We’re just getting started.
Happy AOTA Weekend to every OT changing lives one meaningful activity at a time.
