April is OT Month, and here’s what OT really does:

We live in the in-between.

Between:
• “I had surgery” and “I can live my life again”
• “I’m scared to fall” and “I feel confident at home”
• “I want to stay independent” and “I know how to do it safely”

OT isn’t about perfect movement.
It’s about real life working better.

And yes, that includes couches, stairs, showers, grocery trips, and fatigue on a Tuesday afternoon.

If Occupational Therapy had baseball cards, this blog would be the Collector’s Guide.

From the pioneers who built our profession, to the future Hall of Famers shaping policy, research, education, and innovation today, this post is a love letter to occupational therapy and the people who make it what it is.

We talk about
• The OT legends who laid the foundation
• The trailblazers pushing OT into new and necessary spaces
• The rookie cards you want to grab now because they are going to be worth a lot
• And yes, a little fangirling over the OTs who inspire me to think bigger and practice better

Occupational therapy has never been about staying in a box. It has always been about real life, real function, and real impact.

If you are an OT, know an OT, or have ever benefited from OT, this one is for you.

Why does getting off the couch feel harder as we get older?

It is not laziness.
It is usually strength, balance, and joint mechanics.

Occupational therapy works on the movements you repeat every day. Sitting, standing, reaching, bending, carrying. When those movements get easier, daily life gets easier.

If standing up feels harder than it used to, that is a signal. ...and it is fixable.

Easter is about renewal, hope, and fresh starts.

Today is a reminder that growth does not have to be loud or dramatic.
Sometimes it looks like choosing rest.
Sometimes it looks like gentle movement.
Sometimes it looks like giving yourself grace exactly where you are.

Wherever you are in your health or wellness journey, this season is a reminder that progress is allowed to happen at your pace. Your body is not behind. Your worth is not tied to productivity. And small steps still count.

Wishing you a peaceful, restorative Easter filled with moments that help you feel grounded, supported, and hopeful.

Spring has officially entered the chat

And suddenly we all want to:
• Open every window
• Walk “just one more block”
• Declutter one random drawer
• Decide TODAY is the day we become a morning person

If your body is feeling the spring energy too, great.
If it’s feeling more “allergies and vibes,” also valid.

Move a little. Rest a little. Laugh a lot.
That’s spring wellness, DRM Wellness-approved.

Happy OT Month!

At DRM Wellness, occupational therapy is about real life. The everyday tasks that matter. The goals that keep people independent, confident, and doing what they love.

We work with adults and seniors to support aging in place, reduce fall risk, and make homes safer and more functional. We provide larger body fitness in a judgment-free, supportive environment that focuses on strength, endurance, and confidence, not gym culture. We offer Functional Capacity Evaluations and legal support services that translate function into clear, meaningful data. And we provide traditional occupational therapy that meets people where they are, not where a system thinks they should be.

Happy OT Month.

World Autism Awareness Day is a reminder that there is no one “right” way to experience the world.

Occupational therapy recognizes that sensory processing, communication, routines, and environments affect how people participate in daily life. For autistic individuals, the goal is not to change who they are. The goal is to support meaningful participation in ways that honor their strengths, needs, and preferences.

From an OT perspective, support can look like:
• Creating predictable routines that reduce stress
• Adjusting environments to support sensory regulation
• Using tools and strategies that improve comfort and independence
• Focusing on function, not conformity

Awareness matters, but acceptance and understanding matter more. When environments are flexible and inclusive, people are better able to engage, learn, work, and connect in ways that feel safe and empowering.

Today, we celebrate neurodiversity and the importance of meeting people where they are.

We’re kicking off Occupational Therapy Month by celebrating a profession with a huge impact and a very misunderstood name.

New on the blog.
Occupational Therapy: A 100-Year-Old Profession with a Terrible Name.

We’re clearing up what OT really is, why it’s so misunderstood, and why it matters more than ever. Bonus points if you already know it’s not about getting a job.

Episode 6: Final Reflections on Bigger Bodies and Occupational Therapy | The Empowered OT with Dr. T

We loved the opportunity to join Dr. Topp on The Empowered OT podcast to talk about an important topic in our profession: supporting clients in bigger bodies and expanding occupational therapy beyond traditional therapy settings.

This final episode wraps up a thoughtful conversation about how occupational therapy can better serve people of all sizes, challenge bias in healthcare, and support meaningful function, independence, and wellness.

A big thank you to Dr. Topp for inviting Laura and DRM Wellness into the conversation and creating space to talk openly about these important issues.

If you work in healthcare, rehabilitation, or wellness, this conversation offers valuable insights into how OT can continue to evolve to meet the needs of every body.
