This is an interesting perspective, but it doesn’t fully reflect reality.
In truth, many local dog walkers and pet sitters already meet and often exceed these expectations.
Large app-based companies typically conduct only basic background checks, which can be relatively easy to bypass. Sitters on these platforms are not required to carry insurance, complete formal training, or provide detailed visit reports. Some great local sitters like myself even started on these apps and quickly realized the flaws and incorrect values they inherently promoted that were harmful to wanting to have ethical business practices.
In some cases, a client may receive a single photo with a brief note like “everything was great.” But what does “great” actually mean? Was the pet eating, drinking, behaving normally?
Local professional pet sitters operate very differently. As independent business owners, they are far more invested in the quality and safety of their care. They carry insurance, use service contracts, and often utilize professional software like Time To Pet, Precise Petcare, or Pet Pocketbook to provide detailed visit summaries, GPS tracking, and comprehensive pet and client profiles.
Education is another major differentiator. Many local professionals pursue certifications in pet CPR and first aid, become Fear Free certified, and actively continue their education in animal behavior and care.
For small business owners in this industry, ongoing education isn’t optional. It is an investment in providing safer, higher-quality care. The result is better outcomes for pets and greater peace of mind for their owners.
