Pratyahara: the facet of Raja Yoga between pranayama + dharana.
with body, energy and mind prepared in the facets of yama, niyama, asana, and pranayama — pratyahara is the total withdrawal from the sensory bodies into our true nature within the anandamaya kosha. it is where we learn how to move inward. where we reconnect with our true self. where we de-stimulate to remember our soul. This prepares us for the ability to concentrate in dharana.
Pratyahara can be especially restful for the underslept and chronically overtired… it is a place of deep recovery deep within each of us. It can also be a place that startles us when we first arrive here in practicing yoga. Many of us haven’t been in this place within for a while.
when the body/mind/spirit are so exhausted, as is common in the state of our world these days, it was gratefully enjoy deep sleep in both of these practices. this is normal and very ok. a well rested mind and body are needed for remaining awake and aware in both of these practices. sleep guilt free until you get there.
Yoga Nidra, yoga sleep, is a practice that takes us beyond ourselves. It is what brings us from dhyana, the meditative state after dharana, into samadhi: freedom. The ultimate goal of yoga: liberation from suffering. Yoga Nidra is a bridge to the moksha for which all yoga students and teachers walk this path. It can be helpful to have a grounded, rooted, humble grasp on our true nature found in Pratyahara before we embark on this part of the path.
Yoga Nidra is the Devi (Goddess) of sleep, dreams, consciousness, and the void we all exist within. She is not the next trend or biohack in yoga capitalism… Brahma himself bowed to her in respectful request for her help to wake Vishnu to save him. And she visits us each night as we all sleep! To practice Yoga Nidra is to practice allowing the body to fall asleep while the mind remains awake and aware so that our Spirit reconvenes with the cosmos.
Many students and teachers are conflating pratyahara with yoga nidra these days, which causes a lack of clarity. Both are relevant in our lives in these times. One can be very helpful in preparing for the other 😉 Hope this helps!
