Hey all, back in Orlando for the week. Should be able to give you all an update about my plans as a Rheumatologist and author within a week or two. Thank you so much for your patience.

Feel free to send me a message if you have questions. I will always do what I can and will try and respond within a reasonable time frame despite this transition period.

Remember always, live your value one choice at a time. After all, hard to be healthy if we’re not happy and equally difficult to be happy if we’re not healthy!

If I Can, You Can
And no, it’s not about being healthy, but…..

Through my personal and professional experience, I’ve learned it’s hard to happy if we’re not healthy and equally hard to be healthy if we’re not happy.

Now, I’ve never been a person that exercises routinely (or at all), or chooses healthier dietary options just for the sake of better physical health. After all, there are much easier ways for my body to get the serotonin and dopamine it wants.

So, maybe it’s just having more free time now, maybe it’s having more stress now, maybe it’s tired of being tired and having less energy to do the things I want to do, or maybe it’s vanity. Chances are, it’s all of them.

But, there is something about doing activities that makes me happy. With biking, I enjoy getting a break from the hustle and bustle of life and the media, I enjoy the surroundings, and I even enjoy the challenge of rotating the pedals one more time when my body doesn’t want to. Now, if I happen to get some physical health benefit such as cardio and muscle strengthening from doing it, so be it. But, my focus is on happy, not healthy.

So, I’d like to encourage you not to focus so much on what you should do to be physically healthy (I know, a bit atypical coming from a doc), but rather, focus on defining what genuine contentment looks like to you.

After all, do we really want to make choices that will increase the likelihood of us being overweight, broke, lonely, have diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, or cancer?

For me, I know my days are more content when I get some activity. And yes, I have to convince my brain of this often, but, I know it’s true. And what’s the benefit of me being more content? My self-value improves and with it, my physical health.

So, if I can do it, so can you!

I want to sincerely thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read my post and for commenting, very cool.
Also, I can’t go into detail right now but I’d like to ask you to “follow my page” if you’re not already doing so. Long story and will explain when I can.

Updates:
1. No job yet, I should have answer soon but can still help so if you need anything, just let me know.
2. I’ve been spending some of this unemployed time reading up on functional medicine and will be posting more on what we can do aside from traditional medicine in the coming weeks.

Remember, live your value one choice at a time, this world would not be the same without you in it and regardless of the challenges, every day above the tile is a great day!

Health Care 2024….Are Any Of Us Happy?

Not what we want to read, but definitely what we should read!

Ever feel like just another number when you see a doc, or worse yet, a cattle being run through the pen when it’s time for your follow up or time to see a new doc for the first time?

What ever happened to health care and me, the patient? What happened to actually feeling like a human being and that the doctor I was going to see really cared?

Well, I know it’s difficult, but, please don’t just blame the docs. OK, some docs yes, hahaha.

For those of you have seen me, you’ve probably already heard this so bear with me. We are all going to be patients at some time, if not now, later. And yes, even the docs you see now have been, or will be patients too. And yes, none of us are thrilled with the current system. But, fact is, we the patients and our health care providers are the LEAST important people in our health care.

I know. It’s not a good truth, but, it’s the truth—a truth that we all have to learn to accept unless we are willing to look outside the scope of the status norm and do something different.

So, let’s talk numbers.

Health Insurance companies make billions a year, and yes, google their annual income if you’d like. Some of the big players are United Health Care, Blue Cross, Humana, Cigna, Anthem to name a few. How insurance companies can report billions in profit still amaze me.

Pharmaceutical companies also make billions a year, and yes, google their annual income as well if you like. Some of the biggest players are Abbvie, Amgen, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Astra Zeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, Merck, and J&J. And yes, personally, I think this is criminal as well.

But, let’s talk about you and your doc.

Let me share a story.

I actually had a woman ask me to refund her a 35.00 dollar copay after a visit because I did not prescribe any medication. I spent over twenty minutes with her explaining arthritis and her labs but apparently that was not good enough. Forget that any attorney would care less, after all, for them, it’s simply time spent. Needless to say, I was a bit taken by her request, but, despite what I thought was fair, I refunded her the 35.00 dollars.

What we have to understand as patients (and yes, I’ve been one as well) is this, when our doctor sends a bill to our insurance company for 150.00 dollars for the visit, two things are guaranteed.

1. The insurance will pay about 60% of what is billed. Insurances just tell us docs “this is what we will pay you, take it or leave it!” For any that have ever hired any other service company, that doesn't happen.

2. Also, and more discouraging, they don’t just pay without a fight. Docs, clinics, and hospitals do not get paid without multiple calls and harassment to your insurance companies. Remember,
insurance companies make more if they don’t pay your medical bills. So, yes, every doctor’s office accrues overhead expense by hiring people to simply call the insurance companies,
chase the bill and say, “Hey, hi this is Kathie calling for Dr, Drew Huffman, we still haven’t received the fifty dollars from you that you owe us for the claim we sent two months ago.”

Sadly, even getting the 60% from your insurance company is as difficult as getting all of the kids at my twelve year old daughter’s slumber party to be asleep by 9 pm. It’s just not happening.

What I want us all to appreciate is this…

We’ll pay a plumber 100 - 200 dollars cash for the first hour, more on weekends.
We’ll pay an electrician 75-150 dollars cash for the first hour, more on weekends
We’ll pay an attorney 200-400 cash per hour and almost always have to pay a retainer
We’ll spend 100 dollars on nice dinner out or a show

However, when it comes to our own health, there’s just something about spending more cash than our copay. For whatever reason, it just makes us feel uncomfortable. It makes us feel like we are being taken advantage of, like we’re paying double. I get it. But, don’t forget, we’re all happy to pay cash for a functioning toilet, for our lights turning on, for attorneys resolving our conflict and even for something like a dinner, a show, or a trip.

I understand the thought. I already pay every month for health insurance and my insurance pays my doc. Well, now you know the truth about your doc and your health insurance.

So, if you ever wonder why your doc is only spending ten to fifteen minutes with you, or, you ever wonder why more and more docs are going to cash pay only, now you know.

It’s NOT that docs don’t care. Overhead costs continually increase and the reimbursement from your insurance company decreases. Not a great formula if you’re a doc. If you don’t like the reality, then ask yourself this, what would you pay another person to have your best interest at heart?

As a doc, I apologize for the process, but your doc, especially if they’re a good one isn’t the only person that should take the blame. As a doc with thirteen years of education and twenty years of experience, I have come to learn that we get what we pay for, and, if we expecting insurance to pay our docs what they are worth, well, we’re just not knowledgeable or being realistic about the reality.

And yes, I understand that the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies won’t appreciate this post. But, it’s not about them. It’s about me, the health care provider and you, my client!

And, no matter what they do or say, don't forget, I’m your doc and that means something to me!

Me? Job Security?

Of course I have job security…I’m a physician…right?

Mmm, ok, sure….guess not, haha.

So, for those that haven’t heard, the clinic I’m currently employed by in Lake Mary, Florida as of Feb 2024 will be closing at the end of this month.

I don’t have another job yet, and, not exactly sure what the future holds but I can tell you this, I’m happy to continue as your doc if that’s what you would like as well. Send me a message and we’ll chat.

I do think “health care” is changing. I’ve been doc and I’ve also been patient. Like every relationship, I think the best doctors we can have are those that we also consider friends. I guess the older I get in this field, the more ‘old school’ I become. Why can’t I just call my doc? What happened to house calls? Yes, times have changed (just look at health insurance and the cost of meds).

Regardless of what is going on in your life, one thing I would encourage you to do is this —never forget your value. Remember, this world would not be the same without you in it.

I see a lot of ads on social media - motivational, health, diets, etc…well, fact is…it ain’t one thing!

Ya know, it’s hard to be happy if we’re unhealthy and equally hard to be healthy if we’re unhappy. And yes, that tag line is mine. Why is it mine? Well, I’ve lived it! Not much people have done or places people have been that I myself haven’t experienced.

And yes, I’m happy to talk about the options…traditional med, functional med, supplements.

But, let’s never forget what really matters….namely, contentment.

I do want to thank all of you who have stayed with me, followed my posts, and replied with a comment whether my material was medical or my creative writing. I am eternally grateful.

Hope to hear from you!

FYI: If you’re over 50, yes, you do have arthritis. The question is not “do I have arthritis?”. The question to answer is “Hey doc, which arthritis do I have and do I have other issues causing my joint pain, muscle pain and fatigue?” If your doc isn’t answering this, call me 😂

Hey all, please forgive my absence. Let’s just say life has happened. Will be sharing more about that soon.

For those of you who have seen me in clinic, these will be familiar. To those that haven’t, these are my “cheat sheets”. Yes, I try and keep pain and arthritis simple, inflammatory or not, and let’s not forget about all the other processes that make us feel bad like neuropathy, endocrine problems, vascular disease, mineral and vitamin deficiencies, dehydration, being out of shape and even just stress, anxiety and depression.

So, here are my arthritic cheat sheets and a quick review of the anti-inflammatory diet as well as AGE’s.

More posts coming soon and thanks for staying with me. Grateful!

I See You

I know that by now some time has passed
And the older I get, time moves fast
But I wanted you to know
That even though the only thing left is your soul
I still see you and I still want you close

I remember when you were here. Heart breaks missing days
When I heard your voice and I saw your face.
I should have seen you more. Now I know
But, at the time, I thought best to chase goals
Yet, despite all I’ve done since you left, I can still feel alone

For you see, there’s no one else that will ever be you
The man I loved, the only father I knew
But more than that to me
You were the kind of man that I aspire to be
Humble and caring, always there for others in need

Growing older isn’t what I thought it’d be
And I can’t imagine doing it without the love you showed me
So, I want you to know
That even though the only thing left is your soul
I still see you and you are still close

And you know, that the day will come
I will be with my father and my father with his son
But for now I will do what you did too
Live my life and think of you

A World Full Of Maybes

Maybe they’re qualified.
Maybe it’s worth it.
Maybe it’s not cancer.
Maybe I won’t need the bypass.
Maybe tomorrow will be sunny.
Maybe we’ll finally have snow.
Maybe I’ll be able to pay that bill.
Maybe next year I’ll make more money.
Maybe I’ll find romance.
Maybe I’ll start playing tennis again.
Maybe.

Hmm, maybe “maybe” isn’t best.

Maybe, having more things that actually “are" is better.

Remember, there are only four facets of life that drive our overall contentment and subsequently, our choices and our physical health.

1. Our physical health itself
2. Our finances
3. Our relationships with ourselves and others
4. Our connection to spirituality and the universe.

Most of us can accept (and deal with) one of these being a “maybe”. After all, it’s simple math—one out of four is only a quarter. No problem, thankfully, I still have three-quarters of my foundational base that is secure. But, give me one or two more “maybes”, another pillar of contentment that starts to become unsteady, and changes are I’ll be looking for the pasta and ice cream sooner rather than later in hopes of comforting a life that is drifting closer towards insecurity and discontentment.

Yes, we all will have changes in our physical health as life moves forward. That’s just life. The body is not meant to last forever. At some point, chances are, we will all have to contend with degenerative arthritis, heart disease or high blood pressure, diabetes, neuropathy, thyroid dysfunction, emphysema, Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus, kidney disease, or cancer.

But, whatever you do, please, do NOT discount the impact that stress and discontentment has your physical health and these issues.

The longer I have been a doctor, the more I have come to realize how important contentment is at improving our physical health.

So, I’d encourage all of you to spend more time focusing on being content with the choices you are making regarding your physical health, your finances, and your relationships; focus as much time on contentment as you do on finding the answer to why you are hurting. Chances are, there is not one answer to explain pain.

Remember, everything causes pain, and, regardless of the cause, feeling insecure and discontent with the life your living will only make it worse.

So, smile…,every day above the tile is a great day, and, yet another day that gives us an opportunity to move closer to contentment, healthier choices, and improved physical health.

It’s Really About Me

It’s really about me and the person I see,
Looking in the mirror at the one looking at me.
And as I look, I ask who is it I see?
Is my life what I really want it to be?

I see my weakness, I see my strength,
The good, the bad, the hopes and the dreams.
The times when I thought more of others than me,
But finally I see what contentment means.

Knowing my value and just being me,
Finding others that like what they see.
To always move forward as I chase my dreams,
To have my choices reflect who I’ll be.

Dr.D

Fact is, YOUR contentment IS really about you! Your wants, your needs!

Through my own personal journey and my years as a physician, I have learned that we all use things to make us feel better about living a reality that we’re not thrilled with, but, eventually, even you can’t fool yourself. Remember, it’s hard to be healthy if we’re unhappy and equally hard to be happy if we’re unhealthy.

So, you’re contentment, and subsequently, your health IS most important.

I’m working on on a seminar entitled The Unspoken Risk - Conquering Health & Contentment. I have understood and seen how difficult it can be to find the balance that we are all looking for. I think my seminar can help you if you are wanting a different reality so please stay tuned.

Also, I have a new website coming soon and yes, this is a good thing. Like many, I ordered my own products from my old website and never received them. This will be fixed with the new site so I’m happy about that, I love what I have available in apparel and home goods like coffee mugs. I hope when it’s available you check it out. I’ll keep you posted.

Sometimes, it’s the little things.

Okay, most times it's a little things…or is it?

I remember the feeling I had when I was hanging this bathroom hand towel last week. As odd as it sounds, it meant a lot to me. I know, it's just a hand towelI, but for me, it made me happy. For me, it was more than just hand towel. It represented me making my house a home.

But, then again, when I learned that washer wasn't hooked up appropriately, clearly, my contentment left and it was replaced with a less than desired emotion.

I saw clearly, it’s the little things that mean the most.

And, I could not help but realize, just as the town created feelings of contentment, the washing machine dilemma created stress, anxiety, and discontentment.

Have you ever heard the saying, the straw that broke the camels back? Well, it's true, but, if the straw actually yields greater contentment, it can also make us stronger.

Remember, the choices you're making are the straws and fact is, more times than not, we choose our straws.

Straws affect choices, and choices impact our overall contentment which directly impacts your physical health.

So, yes, little things are little, after all, it's just one straw But, is it? Let’s face it, if you put a lot of little straws together you end up with bundle.

Living your value one choice of time is no different. The more you do little things, the greater your value will be.

PS
And yes, as I'm starting a new clinic, I have recently moved.
You see, we all can get inspired from simple things :)

I’VE LANDED!! NEW JOB FEBRUARY !!

Hey all, if interested, I’ll be doing that physician / Rheumatology thing at Florida Arthritis Center starting February 2024!

Grateful to be able to stay close 🙂.

For the first six months, Monday through Wednesday I’ll be at the Lake Mary, Florida location and every Thursday in Debary, Florida. Both are north of downtown Orlando.

After six months, full-time in Lake Mary.

Also, plan on having brief lecture, question and answer get together fairly often at Lake Mary location.
I’ll post the dates and times here when they become available.

Thank you all for the past year and hope to see you in the future, but, I definitely understand if you need to find care closer to you, or prefer an alternate Rheumatologist.

Whether you see me or another, always remember to live your value one choice at a time-this world would not be the same without you in it.

My Story

Hi, I’m Dr. Drew Huffman, creator of the Live Your Value Lifestyle. I’ve been an arthritis doc for nearly 20 years, an author (Screw This - Let’s Be Real), and a speaker. Through my personal and professional experience, I have come to appreciate that if we truly want improve our physical health and have lasting, genuine contentment, this can only come about through the rediscovery of our self value. It is our core self value that drives the daily choices we make that subsequently impact our health and contentment.

Think about those things that you value and those that you don’t - be it your spouse, your family, your best friend, your car, or home. The more we value something, the better care we give it. Our individual lives are no different.

It took me awhile to fully understand this.

I had placed my value in the relationships I had with others more than in myself. It was this co-dependency, this failure to Live My Value One Choice At A Time that subsequently created an unresolvable conflict in my marriage, separation from my family, and an unforeseen battle to conquer unhealthy coping techniques.
