𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗧𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟮.𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻?

We didn't either until we looked at the numbers.

According to 2019 data provided by the Commission on Accreditation in PT Education (CAPTE), Latinx graduates of PT programs were 6.2% of the total while 𝟯.𝟯% 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱 𝗣𝗧𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸.

Although there were 12.8% Latinx graduates of PTA programs, 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗧𝗔𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝟱.𝟵% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗧𝗔 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀.

So, you might be asking yourself... what about the American population?

According to the 2010 Census, 16% of respondents were Latinx and 𝟭𝟯% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀. These numbers found within the US as a whole are not reflected within the PT/PTA profession.

Black History Month is a valuable time to stop, reflect, and learn about how Black History has contributed to the success and growth of this nation. However, one month is not enough to honor or acknowledge all that Black Americans have contributed to shaping American culture. It is increasingly important to celebrate Black History and current excellence 365 days a year.

Share in the comments below ⬇️ has your PT/PTA program talked about, celebrated, or acknowledged Black History Month?

Do they talk about the issue of representation in the PTA and PT professions?

What do you want your programs to work on in order to support Black representation?
