A concerning pattern I'm seeing more frequently:

children on daily laxatives for months who appear to be 'regular' but are actually severely impacted.

Recent case: child on Miralax daily for over a year, having daily movements that were always loose/mushy. X-ray revealed a 4cm impacted mass requiring hospitalization for a NG clean out after the hospital e***a failed.

The laxative was creating soft stool that flowed around the blockage, masking the real problem while it worsened.

Key signs parents should watch for:
• Movements that are never well-formed
• Always urgent or watery despite daily laxatives
• Child still straining or uncomfortable

Well-formed, comfortable movements are the goal - not just 'going daily- without the need for any laxative or magnesium

If your child's constipation requires ongoing management, it may be time to look deeper into root causes rather than continuing symptom management.

Withholding and the Compounding Effect of Laxatives

Withholding in children often begins as a behavioral response — usually triggered by pain, fear, or anxiety around using the toilet. Left unaddressed, this behavior can quickly become ingrained.

In many cases, laxatives are introduced as the solution. While they may temporarily ease stool passage, they do not address the root behavior. Over time, their use can create secondary complications, including disruption of the gut microbiome.

The result is a compounding cycle:
• Persistent withholding behaviors
• Chronic constipation
• Microbial imbalance driven by ongoing laxative use

What began as a single behavioral concern evolves into a multifactorial problem that affects both physiology and psychology. Addressing one aspect in isolation — whether only the gut or only the behavior — is rarely effective. Sustainable resolution requires a comprehensive approach that targets both.

If the P fruits worked… no kid would still be constipated.

It drives me crazy when families are told:
“Just give them pears, prunes, peaches…”

As if that’s going to fix a gut that’s been inflamed, sluggish, and out of balance for weeks…
Months.
Years.

Yes — P fruits are fine.
But they are NOT a strategy.
They are NOT a solution.
They are NOT going to restore gut function.

What actually works?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Toddlers don’t have money. They’re not driving to the store and buying themselves junk food. Adults do that.

I see far too many kids suffering because of parents choices

And listen — I’m not saying never let your child have a cookie. I believe in balance. But we can’t keep using the excuse “It’s all they’ll eat” when we’re the ones putting it in the cart.

Don’t want them eating it?
Stop buying it.

Because what we feed our kids directly shapes their gut, their behavior, their immune system, and their future health — whether we want to acknowledge it or not.

You’re not being mean by saying no to Goldfish.
You’re being a leader.
You’re being a protector.
You’re being the parent.

Let’s do better — not perfect, but better.
Their little bodies are counting on us.
